The W. S. Gilbert Edition

The purpose of the W. S. Gilbert Edition is to publish and disseminate texts of all of the works of W. S. Gilbert, as well as related texts about W. S. Gilbert and documents related to the bibligraphy and textual history of the works.

It is intended that these texts will be distributed in several forms:

Plain-text editions of all of Gilbert's works, available as HTML-encoded documents over the World Wide Web
Edited versions, available in printed form and as Acrobat (PDF) documents over the World Wide Web
Facsimile reproductions of historically significant editions, available as scanned images over the World Wide Web

The Gilbert Edition is conceived in several series, as follows:

The work of the W. S. Gilbert edition has been funded from private donations and from occasional sales of antiquarian books, printed editions, and ephemera. All of the work of the edition is done on a volunteer basis, and volunteers are sought for the transcription of printed texts into computerized form according to the edition´s principles.

The W. S. Gilbert Edition is distributed principally in Acrobat (PDF) format, which allows unlimited access, distribution, printing, and text searching, but protects the integrity of the documents by preventing editing or reformatting. All works are formatted for printing on ordinary letter-size paper.

All documents may be freely downloaded and may be replicated and circulated so long as the document contents, document name, editorial notes, editor's name, and copyright notice are included complete, intact, and unaltered. It is expected that full credit to the editor will be given if any of these documents are used in research, performance, or publication.
