The Gilbert and Sullivan Collection at the Pierpont Morgan Library (now officially known as the Morgan Library & Museum) came into being in 1949 with the deposit and subsequent gift of the personal collection of Reginald Allen. Since then it has incorporated additions both from Mr. Allen and from many other sources, including purchases by the Library. Mr. Allen served as curator of the collection until 1980; from 1981 through 1996 the curator of the Gilbert and Sullivan Collection was Fredric Woodbridge Wilson.
Since 1996 the Gilbert
and Sullivan Collection has no longer been an independent department
in the Morgan Library, but is now under the supervision of the
Curator of Music Manuscripts. All inquiries concerning the collection
