Member Corner

“Hey, you look familiar…” a fellow patron of the Diamond Head Theatre realized, mid-conversation. Maybe it was from church, his affiliation with Hawaii Arts Alliance, or a former student from the University, Dr. Royal Fruehling pondered? “Were you on a commercial?” he finally asks.

It all began with an advertisement that came by mail. He admits, these types of ads usually get thrown out… but, something told him to hang onto this one. A meeting with Phil ensued, and in 2015 Dr. Royal Fruehling and Mrs. Aurora Fruehling became two of the earliest members (second and third, to be exact) of a new concept called Arcadia at Home. They subsequently became the “poster children” of the program, appearing in many ads themselves. It was such a new initiative that these ads had to clarify, “We’re still at home!” To them, it sounded perfect. They could experience the benefits of a retirement community, while indeed living independently at home. They had no immediate need for care at the time but knew that when they did, it would be readily available.

Unfortunately, for the Fruehlings that time came sooner than expected. Aurora fell ill in 2017, and soon passed. Dr. Fruehling credits his faith, family, and friends for the support through a very difficult period. “It’s a lifelong journey. I just feel blessed that the pieces came together the way they did”, he reflects. “How a Midwestern boy like me, got to meet a great woman like Aurora, and spend his life in Hawaii”.

What he is referring to is 57 lovely years of marriage, that all started with extra tickets to a musical called “Most Happy Fella”. At the time Aurora, a Roosevelt High School graduate of Oahu, was finishing up her Master’s degree in Theatre at Northwestern University. Royal, also a Northwestern student, was working on his Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance. It was a mutual friend who introduced the two. Fast forward a few years, and together they moved back to Oahu. A year later in 1960, they were married. The Fruehlings welcomed their firstborn son Everett in 1962, and daughter Christine in 1967. Royal earned his Doctorate’s degree in Sociology and Anthropology in Education from Stanford University shortly thereafter, and went on to teach at UH-Manoa for thirty years.

“He still gets letters to this day, from students he’s worked with 30-50 years ago” notes Shan. Dr. Fruehling worked closely with graduate students, tutoring and counseling them as part of a committee which critiqued their final dissertations and capstone projects. He was actually the first certified school counselor in the state of Hawaii in 1962. Over the course of 30+ years, he’s had quite an impact on many student’s lives. “He’d be the last to tell you that,” Shan continues.

In February of this year, Dr. Fruehling happily remarried. His wife, Shan, recently completed a PHD (in Translation Studies from Binghamton University) herself. When asked what’s next, she had another mountain in mind. She had just hiked Kuli’ou’ou, a 4.7 mile trail that gains 1,800 feet in elevation. “It’s been wonderful”, Dr. Fruehling references Shan. Together, they continue to work with students at the University. Dr. Fruehling is part of the Board of Directors of Rainbow Schools, a successful capstone project that was started by his very own student in 1972.

They enjoy daily walks in beautiful Manoa Valley, and continue to frequent art shows, plays, and exhibits. Dr. Fruehling is also a published Haiku poet, and part of the “Meguro International Haiku Circle”. Royal and Shan relish the support and companionship of day-to-day life and yes, they are still... at home!

Member Connection

I met Royal in 1958 at Northwestern University in Evanston, lL. I was assigned to the same dormitory where he was already residing. He introduced me to a group of students from Hawaii that he had met from that same dormitory. That little taste of home started our friendship that has lasted over half a century and is continuing into Arcadia At Home! Those friends, including me of course, from the Enchanting Islands (Hawaiian Islands) had great influence on Royal becoming like a Kama’aina!

During our “much younger days“, we did go fishing (caught some small ones only). We also went up to Maunalani Heights and hiked down the strenuous, challenging (no cell phone), but beautiful and fantastic Lanipo trail! -Dr. Sidney Wong

I knew Royal from First Presbyterian Church, which used to be at the corner of Keeaumoku and Nehoa Streets. His late wife Aurora and I were in the choir together. Aurora threw a wedding shower for me in December 1992 before I married Mr. Chong on 1/2/93. Before that, she'd invited me to her annual "Christmas cookie exchange" parties. -Mrs. Adele Chong
