Renew, Perpetuate, Persevere
Residents at 15 Craigside put on a spectacular Christmas performance for the Health Care Center residents, fellow residents, family and friends. This year, the 15C Taiko Drummers performed “Choshi Bayashi” and the Hula Maidens danced to “Christmas Luau” played by their Kumu Puuhonua. The Sounds of Craigside ukulele players and singers played Christmas favorites interspersed with fun skits featuring reindeer, elves, Santa and a projected light display. Thank you to all the performers for doing an amazing job and for making this show come together!
Mahalo to the Honolulu Wind Ensemble for performing at Arcadia! All walks of life are represented within this volunteer ensemble including teachers, lawyers, engineers, scientists, military personnel, doctors, students, and retirees. Although not a member, retired Band Director and resident of Arcadia, Mr. Roy Miyahira, knew a few familiar faces in the group who encouraged him to conduct a song. In the spirit of the season, Mr. Miyahira led the ensemble in playing the classic favorite, “Mele Kalikimaka.”
Sharing Christmas Cheer
Last week, the residents of Hale Ola Kino by Arcadia (HOKA) enjoyed daily live musical entertainment for the holidays. The highlight was a special Christmas program created by New Hope Church. New Hope’s Pastor Russ and Music Minister Jennifer Shiraishi prepared a concert specifically for HOKA. During the program, residents sang along to their favorite carols which brought smiles to all. Mahalo, New Hope, for sharing your aloha and spirit with us!
Mountain Pacific Quality Awards
Mountain Pacific, a nonprofit health care improvement organization, presented an Excellence in Quality Award to Hale Ola Kino by Arcadia and Achievement in Quality Awards to 15 Craigside and Arcadia! This year’s award criteria were based on a quality measure point system that included decreasing adverse drug events, preventing infection, decreasing readmissions, and improving resident vaccination rates for influenza and pneumococcal vaccines.
Cold Weather Treats
The chilly winter weather didn’t stop the clients of the Arcadia Adult Day Care from indulging in a cold treat! The Center made another trip to Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice in Kapahulu to enjoy their refreshing shave ice made with specialty syrups, ultra-pure ice, and gourmet add-ons.
Staying Fit and Active
15 Craigside residents participated in a variety of fun physical activities and spirit days for Wellness Week. A Wellness Fair offered games like Rocket Launcher, Veggie Slicer, and Pool Noodle Balloon Rally with fun prizes and a yogurt parfait at the end. Residents also attended meditative and Zumba sessions.
Holiday Lights Ride
What are your favorite holiday traditions? 15 Craigside Health Care Center residents enjoyed their annual tradition of a ride to view the colorful light displays in downtown and Honolulu City Lights at Honolulu Hale. Highlights included the city’s 50-foot Christmas tree and the larger-than-life holiday figures of Shaka Santa and Tutu Mele.
Clients and staff at The Center got into the holiday season with festive spirit days leading up to Christmas. Last Friday, the theme was the Grinch - a character created by Dr. Seuss. Originally designed in black and white with hints of pink and red, rumor has it that the Grinch’s iconic coloring was inspired by the ugly shade of green of a car rented by animator Chuck Jones.
New Schedule in 2024
In 2024, Ho’omau will be published every other Friday starting on January 12th. We will continue to highlight all the happenings across the Arcadia Family of Companies featuring the residents of 15 Craigside, Arcadia and Hale Ola Kino by Arcadia, clients of the Arcadia Adult Day Care and Arcadia Home Health Services, and members of Arcadia At Home.
