September Aloha Hour: Okinawa

September’s Aloha Hour at 15 Craigside had an Okinawan theme, organized by the 9th & 10th floors. A display of banners and posters transformed the Solarium for residents to learn about Mr. Gene Kaneshiro’s Okinawan Family-Owned Restaurant Project. Books on Okinawa from the 15C Library; a dance kimono, hanagasa head ornament and dance implements from Mrs. Sharon Shiraki; and two special sanshin (three-stringed instruments) courtesy of Mr. Joe Imai were also featured. Residents heard more about the Okinawan Family-Owned Restaurant Project from cybrarian Shari Tamashiro, learned about awamori and Mana-Su (Okinawan super vinegar) from Randy Kuba, and enjoyed Okinawan music by sanshin player Dexter Teruya. A special Okinawan dance was performed by Mrs. Kyoko Hijirida, Mrs. Sharon Shiraki and Mrs. Ruth Tokumaru. In conclusion, residents partook in Kuba Awamori distilled spirits, Mana-Su, Beer Lab and Orion beers, nantu (mochi) and andagi (donuts)!

Brewery Tour and Lunch

Arcadians celebrated National Beer Lovers Day by taking a trip to Aloha Beer Co. in Honolulu’s historic brewing district of Kakaako. Residents chatted with their brewmaster as they toured the brewery and enjoyed a beer tasting. Capping off their outing with a lovely lunch together in the outdoor patio were Mr. Ed Kimsey, Mr. John Tasato, Mrs. Myra Kent, Mrs. Yvonne Toma, Mrs. Eva Kama and Mr. Gary LeMann (left to right).

Banana Splits

Together with Alma Balboa, CNA at the Arcadia Adult Day Care, clients made their own banana splits. To top off the ice cream and bananas, everyone was able to customize with syrups, chocolates, granola, sprinkles and whipped cream. The banana split was invented in 1904 at Strickler’s Drug Store in Pennsylvania. Walgreens is often credited with spreading its popularity to a national level. The drug store promoted the cold treat as their signature dessert.

Going Once, Going Twice, Sold!

15 Craigside’s Health Care Center held their very own auction. Each resident was supplied with 20 Craigside bucks and a bidding fan. Everyone was able to make offers on items such as hats, stuffed animals, crocheted blankets, word search puzzles, bags, pajama pants, and snacks. The most popular items brought about fierce bidding wars. In the end, everyone had a blast and got something they liked.

Korean Dance Performance

As part of Chuseok Week festivities, Mary Jo Freshley and performers from the Halla Pai Huhm Dance Studio visited Arcadia. The studio is committed to maintaining the traditions of Korean music and dance established by Halla Huhm, a Korean-American dancer and teacher of Korean dance in Hawaii. Residents were able to join in on the performance which made it even more special.

Tour of Okinawan Display

15 Craigside Health Care Center residents made a visit to the Solarium to see the Okinawan Family-Owned Restaurant Project display from September’s Aloha Hour. Mahalo to Mr. Gene Kaneshiro for the detailed tour! The residents had a nice time and it brought back many fond memories. What a beautiful connection among residents at 15 Craigside.

Pink Attire Day

In honor of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, residents, clients, members and employees of the Arcadia Family of Companies participated in a pink attire day. Showing their spirit and support are Arcadia residents, Mrs. Elaine Stroka (left) and Mrs. Millie Yamamoto (right), in their pretty pink outfits. Thank you to everyone who dressed up!

Marble Magnets

Led by CNA Taira Lewis, clients at the Arcadia Adult Day Care Center made cute magnets with flat glass marbles. Everyone had fun choosing from a selection of pictures to feature on their magnets. The marble enhances the images and makes them stand out. The finished products are a decorative way to post reminders, photos or lists on your refrigerator!

“October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We dedicate this month to spreading awareness, staying healthy, and sharing positivity. Please continue to keep those who have been affected by breast cancer in your heart.” - Suzie Schulberg, President & CEO
