Lunch at The Old Spaghetti Factory

Arcadia Adult Day Care clients recently enjoyed lunch and each other’s company at The Old Spaghetti Factory. The family-friendly Italian restaurant first opened at Ward Warehouse in 1978. Due to redevelopment of the area, the eatery moved to Aloha Tower Marketplace after nearly 40 years at its original location.

Known for its unique décor, The Old Spaghetti Factory’s interior is adorned with antique lighting, stained glass displays and an old-fashioned trolley car. Popular menu items include spaghetti with Sicilian meatballs and spumoni - a delicious blend of chocolate, cherry, and pistachio ice cream.

Due to the pandemic, outings were put on hold and Anela Bartels, Activities Coordinator said the clients “were excited to finally get back out on excursions again.”

Make It, Take It

For May’s Make It, Take It, Arcadians created adorable sheep towel art. They started by cutting out the outline of the sheep and punching holes. Each sheep was then customized by adding a cute face and hooves. To create the fluffy sheep wool, a soft, fuzzy towel was inserted.

Paper Roses

The residents at 15 Craigside learned a new flower craft - beautiful roses constructed from their choice of orange, pink or red paper. Pictured with their lovely finished products are Mrs. Joyce Nakamura (left), Ms. Victoria Sakai (center) and Mrs. Ann “Lola” Kealoha (right).

Excursion to H-POWER

A group of 15 Craigside residents ventured out to the west side and toured the state-of-the-art waste-to-energy Covanta H-POWER (Honolulu Program of Waste Energy Recovery) facility in Kapolei. Participants learned about waste-to-energy incineration, which is the sustainable alternative to landfills for waste disposal. Operations at H-POWER began in 1990 and today it converts approximately 2,000 tons of waste per day into enough electricity to power 60,000 homes! Thank you to Mr. Wilbert Kubota for capturing and sharing these photos.

Celebrating Mother’s Day

The Arcadia Adult Day Care Center always celebrates holidays with fun activities. Mother’s Day was honored with painted flowers that popped on a black background and Dove chocolate “flowers” that The Center’s awesome team made for the clients.

Vicky Cayetano

On May 17th, Arcadia residents listened to Vicky Cayetano speak about her run for Governor. Hawaii’s primary election is on Saturday, August 13th – remember to cast your vote! Ballots will be received in the mail by July 26th.

Living With Arthritis Presentation

For Arthritis Awareness Month in May, a 15 Craigside resident committee organized a Living With Arthritis presentation which featured Director of Nursing Rosalie D'Sanson, Registered Dietitian Christy Cefra and Lead Wellness Trainer Scott Nguyen. Residents learned more about what arthritis is, the types, how to treat it, what foods to eat and not eat when living with arthritis, and exercises that are appropriate. Informational handouts were available as well.

Omidyar Fellows Commencement

Congratulations to Suzie Schulberg, AFC President & CEO, on her commencement from the Omidyar Fellows program! Suzie was a part of Cohort VIII and completed a 15-month curriculum designed to build stronger leaders, more effective organization, and cross section connections that are necessary to collectively affect societal change.

Happy Boys’ Day!

Arcadia Adult Day Care clients celebrated Boys’ Day by folding origami samurai helmets and creating carp-shaped “koinobori” streamers. Known to swim against the current and overcome great obstacles, koi symbolize strength, courage, and success through perseverance. As koi can grow very large and live a long life, they also represent prosperity and good luck.

The Sweet Smell of Roses

Did you notice the gorgeous arrangement of red roses in 15 Craigside’s Main Lobby last week? The heartfelt gift was received from Beretania Florist with a note that read, “Thinking of all of you. Stay safe!” Thank you for your kindness, Beretania Florist, the flowers brightened our days and lifted our spirits! We enjoyed their beauty and smelling their lovely aroma.

“COVID-19 is and will be a part of our lives for the foreseeable future. The AFC continues to listen to our residents, clients, members and employees and strike a balance between risk and choice as we move forward. Please continue to practice good infection prevention measures like being up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccinations, wearing a face mask, practicing good hand hygiene and letting management know if you are not feeling well.” - Suzie Schulberg, President & CEO
