Honolulu Police Department K-9 Demonstration

Last week, Arcadia At Home members and Arcadia Adult Day Care clients were treated to a Honolulu Police Department (Narcotics and SWAT) K-9 demonstration.

From HPD Narcotics/Vice were Corporal R. Bermudes + K-9 Rush, Corporal J. Fernandez + K-9 Mervin, and Corporal P. Awana + K-9 Django. These K-9s are trained to search for drugs at places such as the airport, on ships and post offices. Even if drugs are removed, the K-9s can still detect the scent left behind. Their favorite reward is a bright yellow tennis ball!

From HPD SWAT Specialized Services Division were Corporal D. Yamamoto + K-9 Decoy, Corporal L. Paclib and Sergeant B. Heatherly. These K-9s search for bombs, detect drug smugglers and the scent of missing persons. They are highly disciplined and respond quickly to verbal ques after an attack. Their reward is the victory of capturing the “bad guy.”

K-9 fun facts: All HPD K-9s are from Europe and understand Dutch/German. While at work, K-9s only respond to commands from their handler, whom they are with 24/7.

Celebrating Creativity, Courage and Collaboration!

International Dot Day is inspired by the children’s book The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. The story is about a young girl who doesn’t believe she can draw. One day, her teacher tells her to make a mark and see where it takes her. She grabbed her marker, made a dot, and signed it. The next day she saw it hanging in a frame and she told herself she could make a better version. She experimented and painted until she made dozens of dots in all different sizes and colors. In the end, she helps to encourage another student that they could do anything they put their mind to. Earlier this month, Arcadia held a “Create A Dot” program where attending residents were given a blank circle and allowed to be completely imaginative within one color scheme. Each dot displayed on Arcadia’s International Dot Day Wall shows off the creative talent of residents.

Watermelon Pick Up

Ms. Norma Izumi and fellow residents at 15 Craigside have been enjoying a summer favorite, refreshing watermelon! The juicy fruit has been available for pick up every week thanks to Chef Jordan and the Dining Committee. The pick up treat will continue through October while watermelon supplies lasts.

Did you know?

  • The first recorded watermelon harvest occurred nearly 5,000 years ago in Egypt.
  • Early explorers used watermelons as canteens.
  • The first cookbook published in the United States in 1796, American Cookery by Amelia Simmons, contains a recipe for watermelon rind pickles.
  • According to Guinness World Records, the world’s heaviest watermelon was grown by Chris Kent of Tennessee in 2013, weighing in at 350.5 lbs!
  • The United States currently ranks 7th in worldwide production of watermelon. China is #1.

Cotton Candy Sky

Mr. Larry Ueki, client at The Center, puts the finishing touches on his latest artwork. The colors in the sky at sunrise and sunset are due to a phenomenon called scattering. Small particles, droplets or molecules in our atmosphere can cause light to change directions, resulting in spectacular skies like the one in Mr. Ueki’s painting.

Corner Bookmark Craft

Instead of creasing the page of their book, 15 Craigside residents created origami corner bookmarks to save their spot in their current read. By using patterned scrapbook paper, and a few simple folds and tucks, their bookmark was ready to go! Pictured above are Mrs. Edith Harada and Mrs. Juliette Lum.

Sharing Korean Culture

Chuseok, also known as Korean Thanksgiving or Hangawi, which means the 15th day of August, according to the lunar calendar, was celebrated at Arcadia. On this day, a full harvest moon appeared in the sky and families gathered to enjoy time together and give thanks to their ancestors for the plentiful harvest. Arcadians, Ms. Esther Chun, Mrs. Esther Arinaga and Dr. Peter Kim participated in a panel discussion about living and working in South Korea.

DASH Exhibit

Congratulations to Mrs. Ellen Chapman, Arcadia resident, on her beautiful artwork being featured in the impressive Digital Art Society of Hawaii (DASH) Members Fine Art Exhibit. Pictured are Lee Henry-Chang (Arcadia Resident Services Manager), Mrs. Chapman, Dr. Ronald Chapman and Heidi Pliszka (Arcadia COO) at the opening reception.

Rev. Dr. Scott and Cedar

AFC Chaplain, Rev. Dr. George Scott, and assistance dog, Cedar, stopped by the Arcadia Adult Day Care Center and brought joy to our kupuna. Did you know that dogs help alleviate stress and anxiety? Even just petting a dog lowers blood pressure, heart rate, slows breathing, and relaxes muscle tension. The clients are excited for future visits from their furry friend!

Water and energy conservation reminders from 15 Craigside residents, Ms. Charlene Oshiro and Ms. Irene Zane

Spare a watt, save a lot.

The best gift you can give to coming generations is water.

“Happy National Adult Day Services Week! We recognize our team members at the Arcadia Adult Day Care & Day Health Center for their commitment and dedication to the kupuna they serve. Mahalo for your heart and compassion!” - Suzie Schulberg, President & CEO
