Origami With the Cherry Blossom Festival Court

The 69th Cherry Blossom Festival court queen and princesses taught Arcadia Adult Day Care and Day Health clients how to fold their own animal origami! The Cherry Blossom Festival focuses on perpetuating Japanese culture, which is why this activity was selected. Origami is a paper art form deeply rooted in Japanese culture that dates back to about a thousand years ago. Thank you to the Cherry Blossom Festival court for choosing Arcadia Adult Day Care for this fun activity!

Small Talk With Reverend Scott

Reverend Scott initiated a new program, “Small Talk with Reverend Scott,” at Arcadia where he will casually stop by to mingle with residents in the Main Lounge. Residents are welcome to stop him and/or sit with him to spark discussion or simply hang out. During last week’s visit, he brought his new therapy dog, Cedar. Residents flocked to both of them and really enjoyed talking with him.

Social Work Intern: Runa Yonamine

Have you met Runa? University of Hawaii at Manoa Masters of Social Work student, Runa Yonamine, has been interning at Arcadia since late August and will be with us until May 2022. Runa is practicing under Health Care Center Licensed Social Worker, Laleh Kazemahvazi.

Some of her daily tasks include family meetings and going through the admission and discharge process. What she enjoys the most is checking in with the residents, talking story with them and reporting any concerns they have.

Runa’s supervisor, Laleh, says “Runa has been a great asset to the Health Care Center team and a great Social Work student. Not only does Runa have the strong social work foundation and skillset in working with our residents, she is a fast learner and initiates tasks on her own.”

Mrs. Violet Kagawa Featured in the Star-Advertiser

15 Craigside resident, Mrs. Violet Kagawa, was featured in the Star-Advertiser’s story celebrating 85 years of Farrington High School. Mrs. Kagawa, a Farrington alumna from the class of 1941, was recognized for her dedication to the Farrington Alumni and Community Foundation, which she has been a member for “a long time.”

Veterans Day Notes From Punahou School

Various classes at Punahou School created these thoughtful Veterans Day notes for the veterans at Arcadia! The notes all had a handwritten message from the students. Each of our 56 veterans received a set of cards. Some of the remaining notes were posted in the Health Care Center activities room, and the rest were displayed on a section of our Veterans Day wall in the Main Lounge. Thank you to the Punahou School students for the sweet gesture, and to our Programs team for sending it out to the residents!

Flower Pin Donations

It’s the season of giving, and we are so happy to see residents and clients of the Arcadia Family of Companies getting into the spirit! Arcadia Adult Day Care and Day Health clients proudly wore colorful crocheted flower pins, gifted by a resident at Arcadia. Thank you to the wonderful donor of these pins!

Candy Turkeys at Arcadia

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Arcadia residents gathered in the Chapel to make candy turkeys out of Ferrero Roche and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Unlike Ferrero Roche, which is made in Italy, did you know that turkey is native only to the Americas? Hence, its popularity for the American holiday!

Paper Sunflowers at 15 Craigside

15 Craigside residents used bright yellow paper to compose gorgeous sunflowers. To top it off, they included a black button and a bow on the stem. They made two each, one for themselves and one to share with a friend. The vibrant color is sure to liven up any room! Pictured are Mrs. Ann Tokumaru (left) and Mrs. Eppie Abe (right).

“Thanksgiving is extra special this year because of what we have been through with the pandemic. I, along with the leadership teams of the AFC, are so grateful for our employees, residents, clients, members, family members and community partners. We would not have made it through the last 20 months without your love, resilience and support. Wishing you a HAPPY THANKSGIVING.” - Suzie Schulberg, President & CEO
