A Celebration of Obon

The spirit of Obon filled the 15 Craigside Theater as residents proudly presented their annual Bon Dance performance. Centered around a handcrafted yagura and vibrant Japanese-inspired scenery, the celebration reflected months of dedication and practice, culminating in a meaningful performance shared with fellow residents, staff, and guests.

Rooted in a tradition spanning more than five centuries, Obon is a time to honor ancestors and celebrate the enduring bonds between generations. At the heart of the observance is bon odori, a folk dance that brings people together in gratitude, reflection, and connection, making the annual performance a cherished highlight of the season. 

Award-Winning Artists at Arcadia

 Arcadia residents were delighted by a special performance by Na Hoku Hanohano Award winners Sun Hui (erhu) and Pierre Grill (piano). Sun Hui is a renowned Taiwanese musician and former Tai Chi champion. She was accompanied by Pierre Grill, a seasoned musician and owner of Rendez-Vous Recording, Hawaii’s longest running recording studio. Together, they delivered an unforgettable afternoon of music.

Rhythms of Togetherness

 Residents at 15 Craigside enjoyed an energetic performance by the   Honpa Hongwanji Dharma Taiko group. It ended on a high note as members of 15 Craigside’s resident-run taiko group joined the performers for the finale.

Underwater Wonders

Hale Ola Kino by Arcadia residents explored the Waikiki Aquarium, touring the exhibits while discovering Hawaii’s vibrant marine life and learning about the islands’ unique ocean ecosystems and native sea creatures.

Fresh Tofu, Rich Traditions

 15 Craigside residents participated in a hands-on Intro to Okinawan Culture class led by Paul and Misa Uyehara of Aloha Tofu Factory. As they learned how the family business, founded in 1950, grew into Hawaii’s largest tofu manufacturer, residents made fresh tofu by mixing a coagulant into warm soy milk. The Uyeharas also shared that 15 Craigside resident Ms. Hiromi Peterson created the calligraphy featured on one of  Aloha Tofu Factory’s shoyu bottle labels.

A Taste of Liliha

Arcadia Adult Day Care clients enjoyed lunch at the iconic Liliha Bakery, a beloved local favorite that has served Hawaii for more than 75 years and is best known for its famous Coco Puffs. 

Summer Fun

Residents at Arcadia Health Care Center celebrated summer with a     festive party featuring pizza, popcorn, refreshing punch, games, and crafts.
