Hanging Lotus Origami

Arcadia residents made a hanging lotus origami decoration by following detailed instructions printed out for them along with some assistance from the Programs team. Each hanging lotus was made using different colors, but all were equally beautiful. Although origami is often associated with Japanese culture, it is speculated that origami originated from Chinese paper folding since paper was first invented and popularized in China.

Mardi Gras Celebration

To celebrate Mardi Gras (French for Fat Tuesday), residents came to the 15 Craigside Lobby to pick up malasadas! As it has become a tradition in Hawaii to eat malasadas on this day, residents had their choice of an azuki or haupia stuffed malasada. Pictured are Programs Coordinator, Stephanie Joe and Mr. Patrick Takahashi.

Girls’ Day Origami Craft

In preparation for Girls’ Day, also known as Hinamatsuri, on March 3rd, 15 Craigside residents created adorable, patterned origami kimonos. Some put their kimono on a card so they could give it to a special girl in their lives! Mr. Masaru Abe, Mrs. Shigeyo “Amy” Baba, and Mrs. Nellie Lum show us their beautiful cards.

Making Beaded Necklaces

The Arcadia Arts and Crafts Committee held a beaded necklace making class. Ms. Cynthia Hirakawa (pictured) participated in the activity, and with much determination and some help from Mrs. Anne Hedani, she made two beautiful necklaces that she intends to wear when the dining room reopens. Mahalo to Mrs. Hedani for helping Ms. Hirakawa and for sharing this story with us!

Ash Wednesday

Every year, Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, and falls precisely 46 days before Easter Sunday. 15 Craigside residents were able to attend an Ash Wednesday service conducted by Rev. George Scott. At the service, he read scripture, offered impositions of ashes and closed the service with a blessing, offering everyone to have a blessed Lenten season.

National Strawberry Day

To celebrate National Strawberry Day, residents at Arcadia were treated to a delicious strawberry cheesecake trifle delivered to them by the Programs team. Resident, Mrs. June Honda, was delighted by the dessert, “Never ending surprises and treats from our magical elevator. Everything is celebrated here! Thank you, Ashley & Gillian for a delicious snack!”
