Ushering in the Year of the Rabbit

Lunar New Year was celebrated in our communities with food, fun and festivities.

Arcadia rang in the new year with a traditional lion dance and a special dinner. Resident Mrs. June Honda shared, “At our buffet, we were surprised to see a whole array of food from the popular Sing Cheong Yuan in Chinatown in addition to food prepared by our Arcadian chefs. When the lion dancers performed, we were surprised again. Three large traditional lions were followed by a tiny, adorable lion (looked like a four-year-old)!”

At 15 Craigside, residents fed the lions red envelopes as the Lobby and Theater filled with sounds of drums, gongs and cymbals to lead the movements of the dancers. The lion symbolizes power, wisdom and superiority and the energetic performance brought good fortune and chased away evil spirits. Residents also enjoyed a delicious Lunar New Year lunch of char siu chicken, Chinese-style steamed fish, lup cheong fried rice, jai and assorted dim sum.

Giving Back to the Community

Arcadia At Home (AAH) members, Mr. James and Mrs. Beverley Yuen, joined the AAH Member Services team to volunteer at the River of Life Mission. The mission regularly serves 700+ hot meals at locations across the island. After a brief tour of the facility, the AAH crew was excited to join other volunteers, prepping and packing cookies, cereal, bread and utensils for meal service that night. It was a great experience, and AAH plans to volunteer again in the near future!

Blessings for the New Year

To enter 2023 renewed and refreshed, Arcadia Family of Companies Chaplain, Rev. Dr. George Scott, visited 15 Craigside, Arcadia, Home and Community-Based Programs, and Hale Ola Kino to perform blessings for the new year. In addition to blessing common areas and department work spaces, Rev. Dr. Scott also took the time to bless residents, clients and staff that were present.

Cherry Blossom Origami

Ms. Shigeyo “Amy” Baba and her fellow residents at 15 Craigside created another origami craft for the Lunar New Year. This time, they folded a cherry blossom or sakura, which represents a time of renewal and optimism, and a good mindset at the beginning of the year. After learning how to make the sakura, several residents made more to be added to the table centerpieces in the Dining Room for all to enjoy!

2023 Aloha Hour Kick Off

Aloha Hour at Arcadia returns to the tradition of being hosted by the resident floors. January’s event was put on by the 10th floor with a Year of the Rabbit theme. Filled with festive spirit, residents partook in spring rolls, shrimp, chicken, and beverages while they enjoyed each other’s company, listened to piano by Terry Tom, and celebrated the hopeful year ahead. Check out the creative podium decoration compiled of 10th floor residents’ hand cutouts in the shape of a dragon!

Microwave Treats

In celebration of National Blonde Brownie Day, Arcadia residents, along with a few Arcadia At Home members, made the sweet treat in the microwave. Participants were provided with a mug and ingredients to prepare the delicious and quick dessert. Blonde brownies replace the cocoa in a brownie with brown sugar for a warm, rich butterscotch flavor.

Way to Go, Kawai!

Kawai Crisostomo, 15 Craigside Wellness Trainer since 2018, recently competed in the Miss Hawaii USA Pageant. Mahalo, Kawai, for sharing your beauty, inside and out - the Arcadia Family of Companies (AFC) is proud of you! We are honored to have you as an employee. Backyard Birds

Arcadia Family of Companies Board Chair, Mr. Martin Zorn, regularly shares his bird photography for us to enjoy. His latest images feature birds that visit his home on the slopes of Haleakala on the island of Maui. Shown here are a kolea (left) and pair of Java sparrows (right). Thank you, Mr. Zorn, for the up-close-and-personal view of these feathered creatures!

“This week we recognized and celebrated our fun-loving Activities Teams at 15 Craigside, Arcadia, The Center and Hale Ola Kino. Mahalo for brightening each day for our kupuna with your energy, cheerfulness and creativity. We are grateful for each and every one of you!” - Suzie Schulberg, President & CEO
