Dancing in the Dark
Last week, a bus hit two electrical poles fronting Central Union Church which cut off electricity to the entire campus. Despite the blackout, the Arcadia Adult Day Care Center remained open with regular business hours. Not having power for half a day did not prevent clients and staff from still having fun though!
Light was brought into the Center with a dance party complete with glow-in-the-dark necklaces and bracelets. A guest appearance by a DJ had clients and staff dancing along to old and new tunes. Home and Community-Based Programs very own Jared Sipeli’i, Home Health Services Assistant, brought his turntable from home and shared his DJ skills for all to enjoy.
Thank you to the creative and quick-thinking Day Care team and to DJ Jared for providing everyone with a good time despite the circumstances.
Arcadia’s February Fiesta Aloha Hour
The festive theme for Arcadia’s February Aloha Hour was Fiesta. Residents tuned in from their apartments to virtually meet new residents and celebrate February birthdays. Delicious taquitos with sour cream, guacamole and salsa and refreshing margaritas (in addition to wine and cider) were delivered to the floors prior to the video presentation. Arcadian Mrs. June Honda said, “Margaritas and Mexican pupus before dinner! The Programs gals appeared from our magical elevator with their pupu cart, decorated with a genuine sisal woven tablecloth from Mexico. FELIZ VIERNES (Happy Friday)!”
Red Hill Water Crisis Petition
15 Craigside residents organized a petition for the immediate defueling and permanent closure of the Red Hill Fuel Tanks. 201 residents and staff signed the petition which was delivered to Wayne Tanaka of the Sierra Club by resident, Mr. David Nakamoto and Tharie, COO Bree Komagome’s daughter, on February 19th. Tharie and her 4th grade class are learning about this issue and Hawaii’s water cycle. She will be sharing the petition with her class and hopefully inspire them to do the same. The Sierra Club was impressed by the turnout and plans to deliver a letter/petition to President Joe Biden each week to keep the issue top of mind. Mahalo to everyone who supported the petition!
“Keeping It Sweet” Treat Pick Up
15 Craigside celebrated Valentine’s Day all week with a “Keeping It Sweet” treat pick up. Each day last week, residents were able to satisfy their sweet tooth by picking up a different snack in the main lobby. The treats included chocolates, Coco Puffs, ice cream sundaes, cakes and cotton candy!
Tootsie Pop Flowers in the Garden
Make It, Take It at Arcadia went outdoors to the garden for February. The craft program is open to all residents and this month, Tootsie Pop flowers were made with colorful paper and tissue paper. The Tootsie Pop was born in 1931 and was popular in the Depression because of its low price. The lollipops are made of a chewy Tootsie Roll center covered with a hard candy coating.
Outdoor Studio
The recent blackout at Central Union Church did not stop Mr. Larry Ueki, a client at the Arcadia Adult Day Care Center, from painting. Mr. Ueki, a retired architect, took his studio outdoors to work on his current canvas depicting a beautiful scene. Did you know that having a creative hobby, like painting, keeps your mind strong? (Mask was removed for picture taking only.)
Origami Dogs
The residents at 15 Craigside folded pawsome origami dogs! Origami is an art form that was originally developed during the first and second centuries in China and gradually moved to Japan during the sixth century. The “art of paper-folding” promotes better hand-eye coordination, patience, attention to detail and gives a sense of achievement and fulfillment.
Bracelet-Making
Like the communities, Home and Community-Based Services’ members, clients and team members participated in an intention bracelet-making activity. Many clients at the Arcadia Adult Day Care Center opted to spell their names with beads on their bracelets. The ladies loved their colorful new jewelry and the men were proud to show off their creations!
