Aloha Harvest and Waialua Hidden Farms

Food Waste Action Week in March demonstrates how valuable food is in our lives, how it unites people and how using everything we buy saves money, time and the planet. In honor of the week, Arcadia collaborated with Aloha Harvest, Hawaii’s largest food rescue and redistribution organization, in getting excess quality foods into stomachs instead of landfills. Earlier this month, Arcadia welcomed speakers from Aloha Harvest for their Hear, Here program to learn how to reduce food waste and what the organization does in our communities. Last week, residents visited Waialua Hidden Farms, a partnered farm where extra produce is collected and given to Aloha Harvest to redistribute to those in need. At the farm, residents participated in light-duty harvesting and planting of crops.

Family Day at 15 Craigside

With many students recently on spring break, 15 Craigside held its first Family Day, welcoming the children of staff into the community. Activities throughout the day included origami, creating baby’s breath centerpieces for the Dining Room, St. Patrick’s Day card-making, bingo and flower arranging. The residents enjoyed talking story and spending time with the youthful spirits while making things together!

St. Patrick’s Day Festivities

Hale Ola Kino made green shamrock-shaped pancakes to mark St. Patrick’s Day. The snack was the perfect accompaniment as residents watched New York’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. Residents also made treat bags for employees filled with Skittles and topped with a heartfelt message: “You’re the pot of gold at the end of my rainbow.”

Over at Arcadia’s Health Care Center, St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated with all things green! While partaking in pupu and green-hued beverages like non-alcoholic beer and sparkling apple cider, everyone delighted in musical performances by resident Mrs. Eloise Lee and Activities Aide Joybell Saluda.

March Aloha Hour: UFOs and Balloons

After being intrigued by the spy balloons in the news, 15 Craigside’s 10th and 11th floors themed their March Aloha Hour around UFOs and balloons. Residents played space-themed carnival games, and snacks included all things round – donuts, siu mai and manapua. In addition, March birthdays were celebrated, and new residents were welcomed. It was out of this world!

National Crazy Hat Day

In honor of National Crazy Hat Day, 15 Craigside Health Care Center residents made hats from newspaper, masking tape and paint. Finishing touches were added with other crafting materials, such as tissue paper, flowers, bells, ribbons and pompoms. After completion, everyone had a blast displaying and parading their one-of-a-kind creations along with upbeat music.

Holoholo Rides

Holoholo rides continue! Every second and fourth Friday of the month, Arcadians board the shuttle for a fun change of scenery. The fourth Friday rides include a special snack stop. On March 24th, residents enjoyed the beauty of the windward side as they drove through Waimanalo/Pali and visited Dave’s Ice Cream, which serves unique flavors like azuki bean, kulolo and ube.

Ikebana Exhibition Excursion

15 Craigside residents went on an excursion to the Ohara School Honolulu Chapter’s 65th Anniversary Ikebana Exhibition at the Myohoji Temple. The exhibit showcased the Japanese art of arranging flowers, stems and leaves into beautiful artwork. The creations inspired those who are ikebana students, and they will continue practicing their arrangements at the monthly classes.

Small Talk

Mahalo to Arcadia Family of Companies’ Chaplain, Rev. Dr. George Scott, and assistance dog, Cedar, for visiting and lifting spirits! Residents and families recently spent time with the duo during Arcadia’s Small Talk with Rev. Scott and Cedar program. Everyone loved spending time with both, and Rev. Scott mentioned Cedar’s “got a fan club going now!”

“April is Stress Awareness Month. Three ways to effectively deal with stress are to practice meditation, exercise 30 minutes a day, and get at least seven hours of sleep each night. Remember to find a healthy balance in all you do in order to live a happy and fulfilling life.” - Suzie Schulberg, President & CEO
