Lei for Memorial Day

May 29th was Memorial Day, an opportunity for all to honor and remember those who lost their lives serving in the United States Armed Forces.

At Arcadia, residents gathered to make 75 ti leaf lei for the 38,000 service members laid to rest at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl). For over seven decades, the City and County of Honolulu has honored a solemn promise to adorn every gravesite with a fresh lei for Memorial Day. Thank you to Arcadia residents for helping to fulfill this promise. This unique display of gratitude is Hawaii’s way of saying mahalo to our veterans for their service.

In addition to the fresh lei, the Programs team at Arcadia created a giant ti leaf lei display comprised of leaves that contained remembrances, shared memories and personal messages. The Remembrance Lei provided residents and employees with the opportunity to remember loved ones who are no longer with us.

Horchata and Elotes

During 15 Craigside’s May Aloha Hour, residents enjoyed homemade horchata and elotes from Chef Jordan Salvador and the Dining Services team while listening to Mexican music and celebrating birthdays! The horchata, an agua fresca (fresh water drink) made from rice and cinnamon, is a family recipe shared by Dining Services Manager, Mirian Tan. The elotes, or street corn, featured corn, cilantro, sour cream, mayonnaise, chili powder, cayenne pepper and cotija cheese that was topped with a lime. For many residents, it was their first time tasting these special Mexican treats.

National Skilled Nursing Care Week

The third, fourth and fifth days of National Skilled Nursing Care Week at Hale Ola Kino (HOKA) were filled with color, pajamas and sports. On Color Wars Day, everyone dressed in green and yellow to match HOKA’s logo. Residents played a variety of games and one exclaimed, “So much fun to be young!” The day ended with a lanai cookout featuring hot dogs, chips and soda. For Pajama Day, residents and employees had a fun slumber party. Treats of Starbucks coffee and Liliha Bakery mochi donuts were enjoyed while singing karaoke and dressed in cozy sleepwear. The weeklong celebration ended with Sports Day which included athletic attire, ice cream sundaes, and a tailgate party.

Bishop Museum

Arcadia At Home members Mr. George Hao, Mrs. Evelyn Hao, Mr. James Yuen and Mrs. Beverley Yuen recently visited Bishop Museum. They explored the Science and Adventure Center (SAC) and the new temporary exhibit "Ola Ka Noeau" in the Hawaiian Hall. Mr. Yuen is a longtime volunteer at the SAC, serving as a docent for 15 years! Mr. Yuen graciously took the group on a tour of the SAC, and Mrs. Yuen shared about her experience volunteering in the entomology department. The members had a great time with the interactive displays, and Mrs. Hao courageously ventured down a lava tube slide! Over in the Hawaiian Hall, Mrs. Hao reminisced about visiting the museum almost every day when she was a child. With so many new displays, she says another visit is needed to see it all.

Wine Tasting at OENO Winery

Arcadians took a trip to the windward side to visit Kailua’s OENO Winery for a delicious wine tasting. The winery uses an Italian technique to produce wines with little to no sulfites. The result is intensely fresh and vibrant wines that finish clean and silky smooth. During their visit, residents tasted a variety of wines including Watermelon Rose and Mango Dragonade Pinot Gris.

The Garden is Our Happy Place

Arcadia Adult Day Care clients are enjoying the beauty of their plants. Cultivating a garden is a fun activity and even provides numerous health benefits. Did you know that gardening lowers stress, increases serotonin, boosts heart health and reduces the risk of stroke, increases mobility, and may boost brain health? All great reasons to get out there and use your green thumb!

Learning Tai Chi

Volunteer Les Asada has been teaching tai chi at 15 Craigside for many years. He has beginner and advanced sessions and also started a chair tai chi class. Students are taught mindfulness in the movements of the whole body and having a connection throughout. A resident who recently joined shared the difference tai chi has made in her daily movements for the better!

Mahalo, Nursing Staff!

Throughout the month of May, Arcadia residents picked up kits to create lei from pretty pink, red and white ric rac. The handmade lei were distributed in honor of National Nurses Month and are a small token of appreciation from Arcadians to all of the nursing staff. The attached tags read, “Your hard work and dedication is very much appreciated!”

“June is Pride Month – a time for everyone to recognize and celebrate the importance of inclusion and diversity. In honor of this, I share a quote from John Lennon, ‘It matters not who you love, where you love, why you love, when you love, or how you love. It matters only that you love.’” - Suzie Schulberg, President & CEO
