Ikebana Lesson with Mrs. Irene Nakamoto

Our clients at the Arcadia Adult Day Care and Day Health Center at Central Union Church participated in an ikebana class taught by Mrs. Irene Nakamoto. Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. Mrs. Nakamoto is a 15 Craigside resident and a certified instructor from the Ohara School of Ikebana. Thank you to Mrs. Nakamoto for your patience, kindness and for sharing your love of ikebana with our clients. They can’t wait for you to come back again! See page two for more beautiful floral creations.

Hawaiian Chip Company and Maebo Noodle Factory

Residents at 15 Craigside went on another virtual excursion, this time to the Hawaiian Chip Company and Maebo Noodle Factory. After learning about each company and how these local businesses started from humble beginnings, they received samples of fresh taro and sweet potato chips and Maebo’s famous One-Ton Chips.

Fore! Arcadia Residents Out on the Course

Arcadia residents, Ms. Colleen Chun, Mr. Jay Paik, Mrs. Jean Paik, Mrs. Yvonne Toma and Ms. Christine Wada spent a fun day together playing a round of nine holes at the Moanalua Golf Course. Did you know this course was built in 1898? Samuel M. Damon constructed an 18-hole course on his vast estate in Moanalua in the year that the Hawaiian Islands were annexed by the United States and just a little over a decade after golf was introduced in America. In 1901, the course was shortened to nine holes.

Quilts by Mrs. Connie Kurtz

Arcadia resident, Mrs. Connie Kurtz, has been quilting for 32 years and belongs to the Keiki Aloha Quilts Club. The club donates an average of 600 quilts, per year to organizations who serve at risk babies and children. Her American flag quilt is an apple core design where the stitches are all curves and done by hand. As a caregiver for her husband, “quilting is cathartic.”

National Ice Cream Day

National Ice Cream Day was celebrated at Arcadia and 15 Craigside on Monday, July 19th. Residents and employees selected from a variety of ice cream treats. Nothing says summer like ice cream, and many people were left with smiles on their faces and happy bellies like Arcadia resident, Mr. Gary LeMann (left) and 15 Craigside resident, Mr. Glenn Okada (right).

Masterpieces in the Making

Working from a photo for inspiration, Arcadia Adult Day Care and Day Health Center client, Mr. Larry Ueki, paints a scenic landscape of a Hawaiian beach, complete with a beautiful rainbow. Mr. Ueki was an architect by trade and picked up his old pastime of painting again. His attention to detail and artistic abilities are impressive and amazing!
