Learning the Art of Ikebana

Clients at the Arcadia Adult Day Care Center at Central Union Church were delighted with an ikebana workshop led by 15 Craigside resident, Mrs. Irene Nakamoto. They were able to learn about the fascinating art form and put together their own magnificent arrangements. Ikebana is the centuries-old Japanese art of arranging flowers. The practice, which roughly translates to “making flowers come alive,” uses carefully selected blossoms, greenery, and other flora to convey a specific feeling or emotion to an observer – just as a painting or sculpture might. Considerations of color, line, form, and function guide the construction of the piece. In Japanese culture, most native flowers, plants, and trees are embedded with symbolic meaning and are associated with certain seasons. Some of the most common elements used are bamboo grass, pine, Japanese plum branches, peach branches, cow lily, and chrysanthemum.

A Special Hula Performance

Arcadia’s hula halau visited the Health Care Center (HCC) for a special performance! They performed a number of beautiful routines that brought smiles and joy to the HCC residents. Hula is more than just a dance. It is used to communicate stories and history, as well as a form of healing and self-expression. For Hawaiians, hula is a way to connect with their ancestors, the land, and the spiritual world.

Red Hill Update

Wayne Tanaka, Director of the Sierra Club, visited 15 Craigside to give the latest update on the Red Hill shutdown. 4th of July Aloha Hour

Arcadia residents enjoyed their monthly Aloha Hour with a 4th of July theme. Mr. Edgar Kimsey opened up the program with a speech he created using artificial intelligence (AI). Everyone celebrated July birthdays while indulging in delicious pupu and drinks. Pianist Terry Tom played beautiful melodies that got some residents on their feet and dancing to the music. Even though the holiday was a few weeks ago, everyone brought their patriotic spirit!

Way To Go, Katherine!

The Home and Community-Based Services team welcomed AFC Intern, Katherine Murakami! She shadowed employees Romeo Ramos Jr. (Registered Nurse), Claire Bailey (Clinical Manager), and Mae Young (CNA Manager) to learn more about healthcare. She also engaged with the clients and joined a virtual wellness session for Arcadia At Home members.

Beautiful Morning at Magic Island

15 Craigside residents embraced the summer heat on a beautiful morning stroll through Magic Island. With a little bit of clouds and fresh trade winds, it was the perfect outing in the brand new Arcadia shuttle. Walking 30 minutes a day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance!

Honolulu Wind Ensemble

The Honolulu Wind Ensemble, a non-profit organization comprised of 66 volunteer members who enjoy playing instrumental music and performing for the community, visited Arcadia. Residents were delighted with patriotic songs in honor of the 4th of July and beloved classics including “I Feel Pretty” from West Side Story. It was a wonderful show!

“Congratulations to the AFC’s three finalists Mrs. Esther Geil (1st place), Mrs. Betty O’Rourke (2nd place), and Professor Kathleen Falvey (3rd place) who will compete in the 2023 Kiwanis Kupuna Spelling Bee finals on July 29th.
