Royal Hawaiian Band

After a few years away due to the pandemic, the Royal Hawaiian Band was excited to return to 15 Craigside for a wonderful performance! Residents enjoyed classic Hawaiian and Japanese favorites along with beautiful hula and vocals. A few special songs to honor Maui also filled the air with melodies of love. One resident said, “Amazing! I’ve never been to a concert this great.”

The Royal Hawaiian Band was founded in 1836 by King Kamehameha III and is the only band in the nation with a royal legacy. The band performs and marches in over 300 concerts and parades each year. Weekly public performances are held on Fridays at Iolani Palace and Sundays at the Kapiolani Park Bandstand.

Lyon Arboretum

Arcadia residents ventured deep into Manoa Valley for a guided tour of Lyon Arboretum which is part of the University of Hawaii and a public botanical garden with a special emphasis on trees. Located on nearly 200 acres, the arboretum has over seven miles of hiking trails and thousands of tropical and sub-tropical plants to explore and discover.

Assisted Living Week

Residents of 15 Craigside celebrated the Clinic team by wearing purple attire on September 13th during Assisted Living Week. Mahalo for showing your spirit!

Tea Time

15 Craigside residents enjoyed a lovely afternoon filled with tea and conversation in the Solarium. Plantation iced tea or assorted hot teas were enjoyed along with a cucumber tea sandwich, poppy seed scone, cream puff and chocolate. Afternoon tea started when a prominent English figure complained of “having that sinking feeling” in the late afternoon. The ritual was born to satisfy this small hunger until dinner time.

Chinese Almond Cookies

The latest “Fun with Flour” Baking Club session at Hale Ola Kino was led by a resident who demonstrated how to make one of her favorite recipes - eggless Chinese almond cookies. Chinese almond cookies in Hawaii typically have a red dot in the center which represents good luck. Everyone loved the cookies and asked for the recipe!

Choco leʻa Experience

Did you know there’s an artisan chocolate shop in Manoa? Arcadians paid a visit to Choco le’a for a taste-talk-tour experience which included a behind-the-scenes look of the business. Residents enjoyed tasting the chocolates, talking story with team members, and touring the shop and kitchen where everything is made fresh on-site.

Chaplain and Cedar

Arcadia Family of Companies’ Chaplain, Rev. Dr. George Scott, and assistance dog, Cedar, stopped by the Health Care Center at 15 Craigside. The duo spent time with residents and had great conversations and prayers with several families. Mahalo to Rev. Dr. Scott and Cedar for bringing joy and blessings to our kupuna. We look forward to your next visit!

Feathered Friend

Nova Kaio, Arcadia Parking & Security Officer, couldn’t help but smile when a baby manu-o-Ku decided to land on her back. The tern stayed on Nova’s back for about ten minutes! Around 45 days after hatching, a chick is big enough to fly. At first, the chick will fly around its home tree, then start expanding its range to nearby trees and the surrounding neighborhood.

Suicide Awareness Month

In Hawaii, one death from suicide occurs nearly every other day. Suicide is the leading cause of fatal injuries for those age 15 to 64. “Happy National Adult Day Services Week! We recognize our team members at the Arcadia Adult Day Care & Day Health Center for their commitment and dedication to the kupuna they serve. Mahalo for your heart and compassion.” - Suzie Schulberg, President & CEO
