A Mark on History

In December of 2018, Congress passed the Chinese-American World War II Veteran Congressional Gold Medal Act to honor Chinese Americans who served the United States in World War II. Prior to World War II Chinese Americans experienced severe discrimination which included the “Chinese Exclusion Act,” restricting immigration to the United States, “Separate But Equal” court decisions implanting segregation and other suppression as well as severe anti-Chinese harassment. Despite their mistreatment, about 20,000 Chinese Americans joined the fight during World War II.

Last year, Arcadia resident and World War II Veteran, Brian Dang submitted his service documentation and verification to the Chinese American WWII Veterans Recognition Project, the group leading the charge in ensuring Chinese American World War II Veterans are properly recognized for their service, bravery, and heroism. This year, Mr. Dang received a letter confirming him as a part of the collectively honored recipients of the Chinese American World War II Veteran Congressional Gold Medal.

On December 9, Mr. Dang attended the Chinese American WWII Veterans Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony virtually through a private live stream. The ceremony recognized Chinese Americans for their service in World War II and shared gratitude on behalf of the United States. The ceremony included many speakers including The Honorable Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, various military branch leaders, and state senators including, Mazie Hirono, United States Senator from Hawaii. Mr. Dang will soon receive his bronze replica of the Congressional Gold Medal.

Tis the Season

As a result of the pandemic face masks have become a part of our everyday. They are now top of mind when we get ready for our day and also have become our newest accessory. The Health Care Center staff at 15 Craigside embraced this new accessory and embellished their Christmas tree with face masks. A festive way to promote face masking!

Specialized Training

On December 7 ProLink Healthcare Consultants began a three-week training at both 15 Craigside and Arcadia to provide education to Health Care Center and Clinic staff. The focus is to observe and train staff, provide tips, and help to better processes for COVID-19 response. This opportunity with the Ohio based company was made available through a service agreement with the Hawaii State Department of Health and our partnership with the Healthcare Association of Hawaii.

In the Spirit of Christmas

To share in the holiday cheer both 15 Craigside and Arcadia decorated for the season. Passersby can see the beautiful dressed Christmas trees displayed on each floor at 15 Craigside and the festive red and green lighting lining the Arcadia Solarium.

“As we head into 2021, think about this question – ‘Once the pandemic fades, will we go back to our old ways…the way things were pre-pandemic?’ My hope is that we don’t and that we keep pushing forward and building off the silver linings and huge successes we have had in 2020.” - Suzie Schulberg, President & CEO
