The Arcadia Family of Companies Acquires Operations and Ownership of Hale Ola Kino

Acquisition of the 32-bed skilled nursing home expands the Arcadia Family of Companies’ services for Honolulu’s seniors

The Arcadia Family of Companies (AFC) has signed an agreement to take over the operations of Hale Ola Kino (HOK), a 32-bed skilled nursing home located on the second floor of One Kalakaua Senior Living Association (OKSLA). For the past 25 years, HOK has been owned and operated by Life Care Services, LLC (LCS), the second-largest operator of senior living communities in the United States with headquarters in Iowa. LCS will be ceasing operations at OKSLA effective October 31, 2022, at which time AFC will take over operations.

“The Arcadia Family of Companies considers it an honor to be given the opportunity to be involved at Hale Ola Kino,” said Suzie Schulberg, President and CEO for the Arcadia Family of Companies. “For the past 25 years, the Arcadia Family of Companies has enjoyed a strong industry relationship with One Kalakaua Senior Living, based on our shared goals of caring for our kupuna, as well as mutual respect for the quality services we both provide. When Life Care Services indicated they would be ceasing their operations of Hale Ola Kino, One Kalakaua reached out to us to inquire if we’d be interested in taking over Hale Ola Kino. We look forward to continuing the high standard of care that Hale Ola Kino residents and their families have received.”

AFC plans to retain staff members currently employed at HOK by transitioning them to AFC, and expects minimal disruption of care and services for current HOK residents.

“The Life Care Services’ team has done an incredible job providing top notch care for their residents at Hale Ola Kino,” continued Schulberg. “We plan on maintaining the name of the facility and look forward to welcoming Life Care Service team members to our AFC ‘ohana.”

“We were heartbroken to learn that LCS, our long-time skilled nursing facility operator, would no longer be with us. Their operations are well-run and they have a good reputation,” said Michelle Kakazu, Executive Director of One Kalakaua Senior Living. “When we evaluated who could possibly take over the operations and maintain the high quality, Arcadia was number one on our list due to their solid reputation, long track record and extensive experience in successfully providing a breadth of services to our elderly in Hawaii. We are elated that we have the opportunity to partner with a company who also shares our mission in taking care of our kupuna.”

“Working for LCS and HOK for the past 25 years has been an absolute honor and privilege to be a part of this Ohana,” says the Executive Director & Administrator, Jolene Kageyama. “It brings great comfort and confidence in having Arcadia continue with a culture of excellence to the people we serve.”

“Hawaii continues to see significant growth in its 65-and-older population, with an average growth rate of approximately 3.5% annually,” said Schulberg. “Yet, we continue to experience a shortage of nursing homes in Hawaii, with Wahiawa General’s long term care facility being the latest to shut its doors. After conducting our due diligence review of Hale Ola Kino’s operations, its financial standings and future projections, the Arcadia Family of Companies felt this acquisition was the right thing to do. Acquiring Hale Ola Kino allows us to further our mission of serving our kupuna by expanding our network of services, while increasing support for our existing programs.”

AFC currently has a staff of 560, serving more than 900-plus kupuna per day.
