15 Craigside Water Leak
On Thursday, March 10th, a pipe in the air-conditioning system sprung a leak, which caused water to pool in the ceiling and eventually flood the hall on the second floor. With quick action and teamwork, staff from the Health Care Center, Clinic, Environmental Services, Dining and Reception Desk were able to protect residents and minimize the damage to the community.
15 Craigside residents, spearheaded by Mr. Gene Kaneshiro, gathered to write a thank you note for the staff, recognizing their efforts and diligence in addressing the water leak and taking care of the entire community. Thank you to all of the staff and residents for rallying through this with such great spirits!
Smiles all Around
March 3rd was “I Want You to be Happy Day.” The day is meant to encourage us to do something that makes others happy. Smiles are contagious and seeing a smile on someone else’s face tends to put one on our own. Although March 3rd has passed, it’s never too late to spread cheer and happiness.
Arcadia Adult Day Care staff celebrated “I Want You to be Happy Day” by dressing up in bright colors and donning a smiley emoji. Thank you to Anela Bartels, Arcadia Adult Day Care Activities Coordinator, and the Adult Day Care staff for always filling the Center with their cheery smiles and fun activities.
Irish Soda Bread
15 Craigside residents got to watch a demonstration on how to make Irish Soda Bread. The recipe came from a resident who has been baking it every St. Patrick’s Day for the last 20 years, now with her grandchildren. This bread requires no yeast and rises from the combination of baking soda and buttermilk. Try the recipe today! (Read full issue for the recipe.)
Making Stress Balls
Arcadia residents made stress balls to use on those days when you’re just feeling a bit frustrated. Each stress ball was uniquely designed by the participants using colorful sharpies. In addition to relieving stress and muscle tension, stress balls are commonly recommend by doctors and physiotherapists for hand rehabilitation, while other benefits may include hand coordination.
Thank you, Lorri!
Lorri Kobata, Director of Talent Acquisition and Employee Development, held a virtual presentation with Farrington High School to speak with students about careers within AFC. The students later wrote thank you notes to Lorri to show their appreciation.
Wine and Design
Arcadia Health Care Center residents participated in a new program called “Wine and Design.” The residents paint or make a craft and have some non-alcoholic wine on the side. In the most recent session, participants sipped on Stella Rosa while working on a St. Patrick’s Day craft. (Mask was removed for drinking and picture taking only.)
A Painting From Mr. Larry Ueki
You may be familiar with Arcadia Adult Day Care client, Mr. Larry Ueki, and his beautiful paintings. Recently, Mr. Ueki painted a scenic portrait for one of his tablemates and surprised him with it. The recipient was very excited and grateful. Mahalo to Mr. Ueki for his generous spirit and thoughtfulness! (Masks were removed while eating breakfast.)
Iggy Jang and Jinna Jang-Gandois
Hawaii Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Iggy Jang and Jinna Jang-Gandois entertained Arcadians with a moving violin and piano performance. The brother-sister duo lit up the Main Lounge with the beautiful sounds of their instruments, and performed popular pieces such as “Clair de Lune.” Residents were so appreciative of the performance and can’t wait for the next one!
"In honor of St. Patrick’s Day this week, I share an Irish Blessing with you…May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow. And may trouble avoid you wherever you go.” - Suzie Schulberg, President & CEO
