Out and About With Arcadia At Home

Arcadia At Home (AAH) members gathered for a couple of events in March - an excursion to view a beautiful ikebana exhibit and a mouthwatering luncheon.

Mrs. Peggy Canonigo, Mrs. Adele Chong, and Mrs. Josie Pometta joined AAH Member Services Coordinator Elyse Espinosa and Home Health Services Assistant Kenny Cheng on an excursion to the Ohara School Honolulu Chapter’s 65th Anniversary Ikebana Exhibition at the Myohoji Temple. Mrs. Pometta took a few ikebana classes many years ago, and she remembers it requiring a lot of patience and practice. The group admired the artistic simplicity of the displays and how even the blank space left in an arrangement was purposeful and impactful.

Members enjoyed a delicious meal at Tiny Pyramid Bistro + Pastry Bar for their monthly luncheon. Originally from Kaimuki, this restaurant is now in Na Lama Kukui Center on Nimitz Highway. The eatery specializes in Asian fusion cuisine with French-style cooking and Southeast Asian flavors. To wrap up the meal, members had the arduous task of choosing dessert from the 16-foot-long pastry bar featuring mousses, cheesecakes, tarts, and more!

Chips, Dips, and Banana Splits!

Who doesn't love a chip-and-dip combo? On March 23rd, Arcadia Adult Day Care Center clients celebrated National Chip and Dip Day with a tasty, dippable snack. The popularity of the chip and dip skyrocketed at the end of World War II with the introduction of Lipton’s new advertising campaign for their famous French onion dip. Last week, clients enjoyed another treat - this time, a sweet one! Everyone indulged in banana splits as a special surprise from a client who wishes to remain anonymous. Thank you for your kindness and generosity!

Armchair Travel: Exploring the Philippines

15 Craigside residents have been touring the Philippines all from the comfort of their Theater chairs. Programs Coordinator Marco Custodio has been sharing about his home country through videos of history, local foods, festivals and culture. Residents also made a colorful jeepney craft based on U.S. military jeeps from World War II that have become a popular mode of transportation. Everyone also tried halo-halo, a favorite Filipino dessert of fruit preserves, shave ice, and condensed milk topped with crispy rice cereal and ube ice cream.

Easter Egg Cookies

At the most recent meeting of the Fun With Flour Baking Club at Hale Ola Kino, residents had tons of fun with an Easter egg rainbow sugar cookie kit. Wellness Director Heidi Caldwell said, “It was cooking, crafting and science all in one activity.” Residents mixed the dough with powdered food coloring in the primary colors of red, blue and yellow, then combined those to create all the rainbow hues. The dough was then cut into egg shapes and decorated before baking. Heidi mentioned the finished cookies were tastier than regular eggs!

March Birthday Celebration

On March 31st, Arcadia’s Health Care Center held a March birthday celebration for residents born during the month. The party’s highlight was live entertainment by singer and musician Ron Tish. It has been around three years since he last performed at Arcadia, and residents and staff were excited to welcome him back.

Sign Language

The Center’s clients spent a recent afternoon learning sign language with CNA Jeanette Tacderan. Baseball fans might be interested to know that William “Dummy” Hoy, a deaf professional baseball player from 1888 to 1902, taught his teammates how to communicate in sign language. He is widely credited with creating the hand signals still used by umpires today.

Easter Basket Craft

To prepare for Easter this Sunday, residents of 15 Craigside made a paper basket with a cross. Using a pattern that resident Mrs. Violet Kagawa created, the baskets were cut, taped together, and then filled with grass and chocolate eggs. Mahalo, Mrs. Kagawa, for sharing the template! Live Entertainment at HOKA

Hale Ola Kino welcomed Wade Cambern, from Hawaiian Style Band, and a friend to the delight of residents. The talented singers and guitarists performed classic tunes like “Moon River,” original local favorites like “Let’s Talk Story,” and even a Christmas song just for fun! Thank you for giving back and taking our kupuna down memory lane with music!

“Warmest wishes for a wonderful Easter – the AFC hopes you have a day filled with joy, peace and happiness!” - Suzie Schulberg, President & CEO
