Arcadia At Home Diner Delivery
For January’s Diner Delivery, Arcadia At Home members tried Italian fare from Brick Fire Tavern, a locally owned eatery that is known for their pizza. The Kaimuki restaurant uses a wood-fire brick oven where the smoldering embers of kiawe wood create an incredible temperature of 900 degrees Fahrenheit!
Brick Fire Tavern’s specialty is authentic pizza Napoletana. This type of pizza originated in Naples, Italy and is prepared with simple and fresh ingredients. Popular pizza choices among the members were the Veggie Monster (vegetables), Funghi (mushrooms) and Mamma Mia (meats). To go along with their pizzas, some also ordered Caesar salads and the BFT signature cheesecake.
Thank you to Jon China (AAH Member Services Coordinator), Philip Isaacs (HCBS Director of Sales) and Jared Sipeli’i (AHHS Services Assistant) for making the deliveries!
January Aloha Hour: Cozy Winter Lodge
Every month, Arcadia’s Aloha Hour celebrates birthdays and introduces new residents. The theme of January’s event was Cozy Winter Lodge. Residents received a pupu delivery of braised beef with gravy and potatoes au gratin prepared by Dining Services along with wine and then tuned in to the virtual program from their apartments. Arcadian Mrs. June Honda said, “It is heartwarming to see the effort put into continuing to keep the aloha flowing amid the arrival of a more contagious virus. Now refreshments are delivered door to door. Check out the picture of what Arcadia calls a SNACK. Quite by accident (on my way to check mail), I SAW PROOF AGAIN THAT ADMIN CARES! They are very involved as usual, helping with delivery to those who are quarantined. There are seven on our floor who tested negative but are quarantined due to exposure to a person who was positive. This place doesn’t take any chances! Stay safe everyone!”
Dinosaur Illusion Craft
Have you ever felt like someone is watching you? 15 Craigside residents created an optical illusion that did just that by folding together a Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur. Once assembled, anywhere you go around the room, the dinosaur’s eyes follow you! Mrs. Margaret Harris (left) and Mrs. Joyce Nakamura (right) are shown with the ferocious, but cute, creatures.
Happy New Year Calligraphy
15 Craigside residents practiced Chinese calligraphy to make a sign for the Lunar New Year. Using black paint, participants traced the Chinese character 福 (Fú) which means fortune or good luck. Hanging decorations with certain words or phrases is a Chinese tradition to help ring in the new year. Showing their calligraphy skills from left to right are Ms. Mabel Sekiya, Mrs. Teresa Ching and Mr. Masaru Abe.
Make It, Take It: Chinese Coin Charm
Ahead of Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year on February 1st, Arcadia residents created charms with Chinese fortune coins and red cord to wish for abundance, good fortune and prosperity. The circular shape of the coins signifies the influence of the heavens upon the earth, which is symbolized by the square cut out in the center. The color red is auspicious and represents vitality, protection, and life force energy.
National Puzzle Day
January 29th is National Puzzle Day and playing them has many benefits. Whether it’s a crossword, jigsaw, word search, brain teaser or sudoku, puzzles put our minds to work. Spending time on puzzles improves memory, cognitive function, and problem-solving skills. Puzzles also offer social benefits. When we work on them with someone, we improve our social interactions. Even working quietly together provides an opportunity to focus the mind in a meditative way that isn't forced. 15 Craigside residents, Mr. Bob Masuda (top photo), Mr. Bob Morikawa and Mrs. Hisako Toyooka (bottom photo) exercise their brains by putting together jigsaw puzzles.
