Japanese Cultural Center

Arcadia residents visited the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii (JCCH) and privately toured the Okage Sama De: I am what I am because of you exhibit. From taking that first hesitant step off a boat onto a foreign land to having your country patriotism questioned after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, this is an experience of the multi-generational history of the Japanese in Hawaii. This exhibition first opened its doors on January 7, 1995 to recognize the first Japanese immigrants in our state. It features historical artifacts, wall murals, pictures, and displays. In addition, the JCCH and the Onizuka Memorial Committee partnered up to create the Ellison Onizuka remembrance. The collection contains photos, information, a space suit, a model of the Challenger Space Shuttle, and the state’s only moon rock available for public viewing. As residents walked through the exhibit, they were flooded with memories of growing up as they saw items they had in their homes, read Japanese words and phrases their families spoke, and viewed old pictures. After the tour, residents enjoyed lunch from the Japanese restaurant, Kokoro-tei.

Holo Holo Ride Alongs

Introducing holo holo ride alongs! Every second and fourth Friday of the month, the Arcadia shuttle takes residents on a drive-by through various parts of the island. In January, they took a beautiful drive through the windward side. In addition to the outings, every fourth Friday will include a special snack stop. Pictured on the right is Ms. Florence Matsuda enjoying a refreshing treat from Baskin-Robbins!

Lunar New Year Aloha Hour

The Lunar New Year festivities continued in the Solarium at 15 Craigside! Residents welcomed the new Dining Services Manager, Mirian Tan, and gave a warm aloha to Receptionist, Jada Kahakeli’i, who retired. New residents were also welcomed and January birthdays were honored. Everyone enjoyed delicious dim sum including char siu manapua, sesame balls (jian dui), and egg tarts (dan tat).

Tie-Dye Shirts

To celebrate Activities Professionals Week, residents made their own tie-dye shirts in the Health Care Center at 15 Craigside! The earliest written records about tie-dye come from China and Japan. People used natural dyes from berries, leaves, roots, and flowers to color clothing. These natural items were boiled, and then the fabric was tossed into the hot water to take on new colors.

What to Expect: 24 Hour Clinic

The Clinic at Arcadia has officially expanded their operations to 24 hours a day, seven days a week! The Clinic located in the Lower Level will be staffed with a Registered Nurse at all times to ensure our residents’ needs can be met at all hours of the day and night. We were very excited about the launch of this important initiative and look forward to the positive impacts this will have on our community!

Lunar New Year Display Case

Arcadians put together this magnificent Lunar New Year display case! To celebrate the Year of the Rabbit, the Art/Design committee filled the cases with various themed items including rabbits, lions, lai see (red envelope), and tassels. This is the perfect way to kick off the new year. Check out the display case in-person in the Main Lounge!

Asphalt Repairs

On January 31st, Arcadia began asphalt repairs in the front parking lot. Contractors dug out potholes and refilled them with new asphalt. While the asphalt sets, please use caution when driving onto the property and do not make any sharp turns or it could damage the surface. Thank you for your patience while we continue the property repairs.
