Hale Ola Kino’s Lunar New Year Celebration

Hale Ola Kino by Arcadia (HOKA) rang in the Year of the Rabbit with a Lunar New Year tea party filled with food, fun, and festive decor.

Ahead of the New Year, HOKA’s weekly baking club made delicious Chinese peanut cookies to be enjoyed during the party. In addition to the cookies, traditional gau and jai were served as lion dances were watched on the TV.

Gau is a Chinese steamed pudding made of brown sugar and glutinous rice flour. Its stickiness represents family bonds. The sweet dessert is topped with sesame seeds which is a symbol of fertility, and a Chinese red date for good luck.

Jai is a vegetarian dish traditionally eaten by Buddhist monks. The ingredients in jai have meaning - long rice noodles represent long life, dried dates signify wealth and prosperity, and shiitake mushrooms and fungus symbolize longevity.

Thank you to Heidi Caldwell, Wellness Director, for sharing the wonderful photographs!

Arcadia At Home Member Brunch

For Arcadia At Home’s January luncheon, members visited a classic local favorite brunch spot, Cinnamon’s at the Ilikai! Some members were familiar with the original Kailua location, but not many had dined at the Ilikai which offers relaxing views looking out at the ocean and marina. The restaurant still had their Christmas tree up which added to the beachy atmosphere with its decorations of seashells, netting and other sea-themed ornaments. The food was delicious! Half of the party ordered different iterations of the restaurant’s famous eggs benedict combos like kalbi benedict, mahi mahi benedict, crab cake benedict, and pork belly benedict. The servings were generous, and everyone went home with little take-out boxes to enjoy for breakfast again the next day. Mahalo to member, Mr. Walter Ozawa, for capturing the great photos!

15 Craigside Casino Fun

Residents at 15 Craigside have been testing their luck at a series of fun casino events. Many enjoyed playing high/low where bets were placed if they believed their card was higher or lower than the dealer’s. Residents also participated in roulette, guessing if the ball would land on black or red. The games will continue throughout the month with keno and bingo. Good luck!

103 Years Young!

Happy 103rd Birthday to Arcadia resident, Mrs. Lucile Mistysyn! In celebration of her amazing birthday, the 11th floor hosted a gathering of residents, family and employees. Fellow resident and friend, Mrs. Kathryn Fitzsimmons drew Mrs. Mistysyn a birthday card and gave her a red carnation lei. Everyone sang “Happy Birthday” and enjoyed a slice of cake. Bank of Hawaii (BOH) also acknowledged her special day with a visit in the Main Lounge. Peter Ho, BOH Chairman, President & CEO, attended along with other bank employees. Mrs. Mistysyn has been a customer for 103 years - her parents opened an account for her when she was born. Mrs. Mistysyn says the secret to her long and healthy life is one Dove chocolate a day!

Life Is Better With Pancakes!

On Fridays at Hale Ola Kino by Arcadia, everyone gathers for their weekly baking club called “Fun With Flour.” On this particular Friday, pancake batter was whipped up then freshly cooked on the griddle. Looks like the best part was sampling the yummy finished products!

Valentine’s Day Hearts

Valentine’s Day is coming up and clients at the Arcadia Adult Day Care prepared for the occasion by making tissue paper hearts in shades of red and pink. The heart shape is used worldwide to represent love, emotion, and caring. Did you know one of the most widely used emojis is the red heart? It is universally recognized as a sign of love and gratitude.

Heart Boxes

Also in preparation for Valentine’s Day, 15 Craigside residents created heart boxes. The first step was to cut out the outline of the box on colored cardstock which was then followed with a few simple folds to create the box. The boxes were then filled with assorted chocolates and secured shut with lots of love.

“To our residents, clients, members, and employees – you are the heart of the Arcadia Family of Companies. We wish you love and happiness on Valentine’s Day and always.” - Suzie Schulberg, President & CEO
