Ringing in the New Year
On February 4th, Arcadia rang in the Chinese New Year with a traditional lion dance performance. The dancers performed outdoors on both the mauka and makai sides of the community. Lai see envelopes and offerings were fed to the lions by staff on behalf of the residents.
Even though residents were not able to personally feed the lions due to COVID restrictions, they were able to enjoy the festivities from their balconies. As resident, Mrs. June Honda noted, “Somehow, Arcadia always manages to make us feel special. Almost everyday, something nice happens to us. Perhaps the lions liked the taste of our lai see because one actually stopped to acknowledge us. Have you ever seen a Chinese lion wave? Unbelievable! The Year of the Tiger is off to a great start!”
To cap off the new year celebration, residents feasted on a special Chinese dinner prepared by Chef Ryan Nomura and the Dining Services team.
Casino Week
A little bit of Las Vegas recently came to 15 Craigside’s Health Care Center during their Casino Week. Residents had a blast playing various individual casino games such as high low, blackjack and flip the chip. Some even tried their luck on a mini slot machine! The Activities team also took the games to the rooms of those who were in isolation so they could join in on the fun.
Puppy Valentine’s Day Craft
Puppy love was in the air at 15 Craigside this week. Residents created this adorable puppy craft with lots and lots of hearts. Do you see the upside down and sideward hearts that make the face and ears? It would definitely be a great Valentine to give to anyone having a “ruff” week. Valentine’s Day isn’t just for romance. Did you know that in 2020, around 27.6 million American households gave Valentine’s Day presents to their pet dogs and more than 17.1 million picked up gifts for their cats? In total, Americans spent an estimated $751.3 million on gifts for their pets on Valentine’s Day. That’s a lot of treats and toys!

Random Acts of Kindness Day
Coming up on February 17th is National Random Acts of Kindness Day. Not only do acts of kindness bring joy to the receiver, but they spread positive reactions to the giver too! Here are some ideas on how you can observe the day - leave a kind note for someone, share words of encouragement, mail a “thinking of you” card, just smile, or be a welcoming neighbor.
Lantern-Making
Kung Hee Fat Choy! Clients at the Arcadia Adult Day Care got into the spirit of the Chinese New Year by crafting festive lanterns. The red and gold colors of tissue paper have special meaning in Chinese culture. Red symbolizes good fortune, joy and happiness. Gold symbolizes wealth and prosperity. Hanging a lantern in front of the door is believed to drive off bad luck.
“Valentine’s Day inspires us to fill every heart with love for all…best wishes on Valentine’s Day to our residents, clients, members and employees.” - Suzie Schulberg, President & CEO
