March Aloha Hour at Arcadia

Arcadians virtually celebrated Aloha Hour with a St. Patrick’s Day theme on March 18th to meet new residents and celebrate this month’s birthdays. Residents were served a green bundt cake with a decadent Baileys Irish Cream glaze in the spirit of the holiday, and the pupu consisted of corned beef atop their choice of fries or chips. In addition to wine and sparkling cider, Guinness beer was also offered to complement the theme. It was a festive celebration that also included special guest, pianist Terry Tom! Residents enjoyed the live music while picking up their food and beverages in the Chapel decorated with shamrocks, rainbows and pots of gold.

Pots of Gold and Four-Leaf Clovers

15 Craigside residents commemorated St. Patrick’s Day with a pair of festive crafts. Little pots of gold at the end of the rainbow were created with paper that was cut and assembled. The completed product was then filled with chocolate gold bars. One resident said the rainbow reminded them of the rainbows that appear across Nuuanu valley at 15 Craigside! For the second craft, lucky four-leaf clover mosaics were pieced together by using different colored papers to create unique patterns and designs.

St. Patrick’s Day Decorations

Clients at the Arcadia Adult Day Care got into the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day throughout the month of March. Thank you to Anela Bartels, Activities Coordinator, and the staff at The Center for engaging clients with such a diverse selection of decorative crafts to observe the holiday!

Make It, Take It: St. Paddy’s Door Hanging

To mark St. Patrick’s Day, Arcadians made rainbow door decorations to hang in their apartments! Wooden craft sticks were transformed into a vibrant rainbow and adorned with a shimmering three-leaf clover. A pot of gold was hung just below the rainbow to finish off the festive craft. According to Irish legend, St. Patrick used the shamrock, a three-leafed plant (which is not to be confused with the four-leaf clover), as a metaphor for the Holy Trinity when he was first introducing Christianity to Ireland.

Remembering Hell’s Half Acre and Tin Can Alley

Mr. Eugene “Gene” Kaneshiro, a resident at 15 Craigside, finds it fun to reminisce about the old times and recently submitted his memories to Bob Sigall of the Honolulu Star Advertiser’s Rearview Mirror column. Here’s a little of the March 18th article featuring Mr. Kaneshiro, whose father, Tosh Kaneshiro, owned the original Columbia Inn restaurant:

“The original Columbia Inn was located at 116 N. Beretania Street, at the corner of Beretania and Maunakea Streets, aka Tin Can Alley. My dad, Tosh Kaneshiro, and his brother Frank opened Columbia Inn in 1941. At the time, Tosh referred to Columbia Inn as ‘The Gem in the Slums.’ Hell’s Half Acre’s location producer visited Columbia Inn while scouting the area. He wrote to ask whether Columbia Inn would close every evening after 8 p.m. to feed the cast and crew for the duration of the 1953 filming. The location producer’s letter was addressed, ‘The Gem in the Slums, Honolulu, Hawaii.’ The Honolulu Post Office delivered it. Tosh accepted the offer and fed actors such as Wendell Corey and Evelyn Keyes and the crew.”

Happy Birthday!

The wonderful staff at the Arcadia Adult Day Care and Day Health Center at Central Union Church always make birthdays fun and special for clients. Everyone at The Center recently celebrated with a client on her 102nd birthday to wish her a day filled with happiness and a year filled with joy! The party included two colorfully decorated cakes that were enjoyed by all.

Mandala Designs

15 Craigside residents participated in a meditative activity by creating mandala designs. A mandala is a symbolic diagram used in the performance of sacred rites and as an instrument of meditation. After watching a short video on how to create mandalas, they drew their own on recycled CDs. The reflective surface of the CDs helped the designs shine through.

Bagpipe Performance

Arcadia welcomed the Celtic Pipes and Drums of Hawaii for St. Patrick’s Day! The group entertained residents with a mix of classic and local songs, as well as a short Irish dance number. The residents were delighted to have a traditional Irish performance to celebrate the holiday! Did you know that bagpipes have no volume control and can be heard up to 10 miles away?
