Out and About!

To celebrate Father’s Day, Hale Ola Kino by Arcadia (HOKA) residents went on their first outing since the pandemic! They grabbed their sun hats and took a field trip to Baskin-Robbins for a sweet summer treat. Family members volunteered to assist the residents in their “walk and roll” parade from Kalakaua Avenue to South King Street. It was a beautiful day for everyone to embrace the warm weather and enjoy each other’s company.

Former President, Barack Obama’s first job was at this Baskin-Robbins! The article pictured on the bottom right highlights the valuable lessons he learned about responsibility and hard work. Take a look at the adorable photo of Lorri Kobata, Arcadia Family of Companies Director of Talent Acquisition and Employee Development with her mother, Mrs. Alice Nakaguma, HOKA resident (top middle).

Older Americans Month Celebration

On Friday, June 2nd, 15 Craigside hosted the Older Americans Month awards ceremony and luncheon with an “Aging Unbound” theme. The event honors outstanding kupuna volunteers from each county across the state. Everyone was delighted with the preset menu that included a salad, braised shortribs with red wine demi, potato pave, miso butter maitake mushroom, and a three-layered chocolate coppa for dessert.

Royal Hawaiian Band

Arcadia welcomed the Royal Hawaiian Band for another sensational performance! Mrs. June Honda shared a photo of Bandmaster Clarke Bright with Arcadians Mr. Roy and Mrs. Catherine Miyahira. Mr. Roy Miyahira was the Band Director at Kamehameha Schools Kapalama and after he left, Clarke Bright stepped into the position. The two have known each other for over 30 years!

Kamaka Ukulele Factory

Arcadia residents visited Kamaka Ukulele Factory to explore the facility, learn about its history, and observe the assembling process. They later headed over to H Mart to shop for some goodies and have lunch. Samuel Kamaka began crafting koa wood ukulele from his basement and in 1916, formed his one-man shop. He laid out a pattern for a new oval-shaped ukulele body and noticed that it looked like a pineapple. The tropical fruit was painted on the front and the original Pineapple Ukulele was born!

Via Gelato

Clients at the Arcadia Adult Day Care Center at Central Union Church kicked off summer with a refreshing dessert from Via Gelato in Kaimuki. The shop opened in 2014 and is known for its locally inspired flavors including black sesame, milk tea, haupia, mango, and lilikoi. The gelato makers produce 21 flavors each day that bring joy and happiness, they even have a board that takes flavor suggestions from customers!

First Chinese Church Ukulele Group

Clients at The Center were thrilled with a performance from The First Chinese Church of Christ in Hawaii’s ukulele group. The church was founded in 1879 and was granted its royal charter by King David Kalakaua. It was started by immigrant Chinese Christians seeking to have services that could be held in their native language.

Magic Island Walk

15 Craigside’s summer excursions are back until August! Residents went on a beautiful early morning stroll around Magic Island. They enjoyed the fresh ocean breeze and breathtaking scenery while getting their steps in. Turtle Crafts

To celebrate World Turtle Day, clients at The Center created adorable turtle crafts. They used colorful, crinkled tissue paper to emulate a turtle’s shell pattern. American Tortoise Rescue, a nonprofit organization, created this annual observance to help people celebrate turtles and protect them from their disappearing habitats around the world.

“This week, the AFC took another giant step in loosening COVID restrictions. Residents, clients, members and visitors are no longer required to wear face masks! However, keep in mind that if we do experience outbreaks in our communities and programs, face masks will be required for the duration of the outbreak.” - Suzie Schulberg, President & CEO
