Shave Ice Season

Summer is officially here and the hot days are the perfect reason to indulge in shave ice! Arcadia Adult Day Care Center clients did just that and cooled off at Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice located on Kapahulu Avenue.

Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice is a popular local shop from Maui that opened its first Oahu location earlier this year. With seven locations on the Valley Isle, the business’ motto is “All shave ice is not created equal.”

Since they were in the neighborhood, The Center’s staff picked up malasadas from Leonard’s Bakery. The freshly fried and sugary treats were the perfect afternoon pick-me-up!

Happy summer, everyone! Remember to beat the summer heat and stay cool like The Center’s clients!

Summer Kick-Off BBQ

The first day of summer was on June 21st and 15 Craigside’s Health Care Center kicked off the season the next day with a fun-filled BBQ. Residents took advantage of the beautiful weather and headed outside under the shade of umbrellas to enjoy each other’s company as they ate grilled hot dogs, chicken patties, and chips. Refreshing ice-cold drinks and sweet watermelon were also served to stay hydrated.

Happy 102nd Birthday!

Longtime Hale Ola Kino by Arcadia resident, Mrs. Rachel Lee, celebrated her 102nd birthday! Mrs. Lee has five children and dozens of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and many came to enjoy the special day alongside her. Mrs. Lee’s six-year-old great-granddaughter played “Happy Birthday” on the piano, family members piled lei up to her chin, and a heartfelt slideshow video was shown of her life over the last century!

Welcome, Katherine!

The Arcadia Family of Companies is partnering with Hawaii Workforce Pipeline to host Roosevelt High School senior Katherine Murakami this summer. The organization helps to bridge the gap between traditional education and careers that provide a sustainable living wage. Over the next five weeks, Katherine will be visiting 15 Craigside, Arcadia, and Home and Community-Based Services to learn more about healthcare.

Kupuna Spelling Bee

The Arcadia Family of Companies hosted and sponsored a preliminary round of the 2nd Annual Kiwanis Kupuna Spelling Bee at Arcadia on June 27th. Open to all Hawaii residents age 60 or better, the event is a fun and rewarding way to stay mentally fit. Participants included Arcadians Professor Kathleen Falvey, Mrs. Kay Fitzsimmons, Mrs. Esther Geil, Mrs. Lucile Mistysyn and Mrs. Betty O’Rourke, and Arcadia Adult Day Care Center clients Mrs. Janice Motoshige, Mrs. Florence Puu, Ms. Lynette Tanaka and Mrs. Fannie Wong. Congratulations to our three preliminary winners – Mrs. Geil (1st place), Mrs. O’Rourke (2nd place) and Professor Falvey (3rd place). The top three advanced to the finals which will be held on July 29th at the Lanakila Senior Center.

Canines at Craigside

June 23rd was all about the dogs at 15 Craigside! In celebration of National Take Your Dog to Work Day, Gina Heshiki, Activities Supervisor, brought her Chocolate Labrador, Abby to work where she visited with Health Care Center (HCC) residents and Clinic staff. Abby will be 11 years old in July and brought many smiles to those she met. Pet therapy friends, Klydee and Koa, also stopped by to brighten the day of HCC residents.

Bon Dance Season

June means the start of Obon festival time and 15 Craigside residents took a trip to the Hawaii Betsuin to enjoy dancing, taiko drumming, ono food and fellowship! Bon dance gives us a chance to express our gratitude to our ancestors, teachers and friends, to show appreciation to them, and to express how fortunate we are to be able to listen to the Buddha’s teachings.

Pizza Party!

Arcadia At Home met at J. Dolan’s in Kahala which is known for its New York-style pizza and Irish pub atmosphere. With so many pizzas to try, members took advantage of the half-and-half ordering, where you can order two different topping combos to split on one pie. Members agree that this is a great, casual pizza joint, and ordering a basket of fries is a must!

Classical Music Performance

Violinist Rachel Saul and pianist Jasmine Nagano delighted Arcadians with a concert of beautiful classical music melodies. Did you know that classical music has been proven to have health benefits? They include reducing stress, improving sleep quality, and boosting brain power. Listening to classical music can also help to lower one’s blood pressure and heart rate.

“Happy 4th of July as we head into the holiday weekend! As we gather with our ohana to enjoy barbeques and fireworks displays, remember to be safe and watch out for one another.” - Suzie Schulberg, President & CEO
