TB Testing and Tea Party

Arcadia At Home (AAH) members due for their annual TB testing signed up to have their tests administered by Home and Community-Based Services Clinical Manager, Claire Bailey, at Central Union Church. To turn the testing into a fun event, the AAH member services team threw a tea party to celebrate. This was a well-received event last year, and it has now become an annual tradition.

This year’s tea party followed a Hawaiian theme and Member Services Coordinator, Elyse Espinosa, picked ti leaves and bird of paradise flowers from her backyard to decorate the tables. Members snacked on mini sandwiches, fruits and pastries on plates with a puakenikeni design. Lilikoi and mango tea were available for a cup of hot tea, but the cold brew pineapple tea was a popular choice. The Milky Way Hawaii truck was also available for an icy cold treat, and many members tried boba for the first time! It was a beautiful gathering, with members chatting and catching up on this sunny summer day.

AFC Shake and Take Chicken

Arcadia celebrated National Fried Chicken Day on July 6th in an interactive way. Residents received a paper bag filled with fried Wing Dings and were able to select a dry seasoning to spice up their chicken including buffalo, chipotle barbeque, desert heat, lemon pepper, and salt and vinegar. The Programs team added the seasoning to the bag and residents shook it up to coat their wings. What a fun spin on an old classic!

Fun at the Arcade

15 Craigside Health Care Center residents recently tried their hand at playing arcade games. Even though it was their first experience with video games like Mario Kart, they did very well. Gina Heshiki, Activities Supervisor, said there was “fierce competition” as residents participated in go-kart races.

Festive 4th of July

It was all about red, white and blue stars and stripes for the 4th of July at Arcadia’s Health Care Center. In honor of the holiday, residents made wreaths and tin can baskets that were decorated with patriotic flags and stars.

Lion Dance Presentation

The Gee Yung Martial Arts Dragon & Lion Dance Sports Association visited 15 Craigside for a lion dance presentation. Residents learned about the myth of a lion being sent to Earth to protect and serve the good of the people and ward off negative and evil spirits. After learning aspects of the lion blessing with the instruments used and different styles, a few residents joined in playing the cymbals while the lions paraded throughout the Theater!

Rainbow Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Hale Ola Kino by Arcadia residents made edible art in the form of rainbow grilled cheese sandwiches. Using milk and food coloring, slices of bread were painted into colorful works of art. Mozzarella cheese and food coloring were mixed to make the insides of the sandwiches colorful as well. After grilling, everyone enjoyed eating the fruits of their labor!

102nd Birthday Celebration

Hale Ola Kino by Arcadia celebrated another centenarian birthday. Happy 102nd birthday to beloved resident, Mr. “Jiggs” Tamashiro! Family gathered with Mr. Tamashiro for an intimate party on the Lanai. Although there was enough cake and ice cream for all, Mr. Tamashiro was still hungry as he playfully bit his birthday card!

Cocktails at Craigside

To celebrate National Pina Colada Day on July 10th, 15 Craigside residents enjoyed this refreshing drink with a pineapple slice and cherry on top during lunch service. Meaning “strained pineapple,” the pina colada was first created in Puerto Rico by combining pineapple, rum and coconut cream. It was the perfect drink to cool down on hot, summer days!

Afternoon Entertainment and Hula

The Arcadia Adult Day Care Center recently enjoyed some afternoon entertainment and the beautiful music brought a client to her feet to perform a lovely hula. Her smile and gracefulness were appreciated by all. Hula offers numerous physical and mental health benefits including cardiovascular health, flexibility, strength, stress relief, mental health, and socialization.
