Ice Cream Social

Thanks to President Ronald Reagan, we celebrate National Ice Cream Day annually on the third Sunday of July. In 1984 he declared a day for ice cream and proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month as well. Reagan said, “Ice cream is a nutritious and wholesome food, enjoyed by over ninety percent of the people in the United States. It enjoys a reputation as the perfect dessert and snack food.”

On July 14th, Arcadia celebrated by welcoming residents and staff to swing by and grab a refreshing ice cream treat in the Garden. It was the perfect way to cool down in the afternoon summer heat. A sundae station was set up with a full topping bar featuring peanuts, walnuts, marshmallows, caramel and chocolate sauces, whipped cream and cherries. The menu also included an array of frozen delights like Haagen-Dazs bars, Drumstick cones and boba popsicles. Resident, Mrs. June Honda, summed up the event by sharing, “True to Arcadia’s family spirit, it was uplifting to see all residents and employees were invited for ice cream.”

Asian Food Hall Lunch

15 Craigside residents enjoyed an outing for lunch at Stix Asia in the heart of Waikiki. The eating hall has 17 diverse restaurants from various Asian countries. After exploring the different eateries, the residents chose Sushi Matsuri where they enjoyed delicious sushi and tempura. The rice was especially ono because it was from Japan! Some even got matcha ice cream and gelato for dessert!

Musubi Days

Weekly musubi days are enjoyed every Friday at Arcadia’s Health Care Center. Residents recently enjoyed a Spam musubi cooking demonstration along with a coordinating origami craft. In keeping with the local theme, residents folded adorable aloha shirts and adorned them with colorful flowers.

Summer Games

15 Craigside Health Care Center residents played a competitive match of balloon volleyball. With a net dividing the players into two teams, the game got everyone involved and working together to hit the balloons over to the opposing side. In addition to being fun, the activity promotes great upper-body movement and exercise.

Refreshing Summertime Beverages

The Programs team at Arcadia served up ice-cold lemonade and limeade with ginger ale and mint to cool off from the warm summer weather. An option to add rum to the limeade mixture was also offered to create a quick mojito. Residents loved the mojito and for many, it was their first time enjoying this cocktail. The beverages were perfectly paired with crispy Hawaiian Chip Company taro chips.

Moss Art Workshop

Arcadia Adult Day Care Center clients recently participated in a fun moss art workshop. Live Long and Plant, a plant-centered lifestyle brand, provided all the materials and showed everyone how to create unique pieces of art. The clients enjoyed unleashing their creativity and were pleased with their beautiful finished results!

Painting Class by Cecilia

Arcadia Health Care Center residents participated in a painting class led by Activities Aide Cecilia Vargas. The canvases feature striking silhouettes of palm trees against beautiful skies. Outside of work, Cecilia is a plein air artist and she enjoys going to scenic locations on the island to paint with fellow painters. Mahalo, Cecilia, for sharing your talent!

Potluck Piano Club

15 Craigside residents (and AFC Chaplain Rev. Dr. George Scott) enjoyed music by the Piano Potluck Club. With a variety of musical instruments, the group performed piano pieces, duets and solos on the viola and the shakuhachi - a Japanese end-blown bamboo flute. Three members were a married couple and their son. What a talented family!

Koi Pond Restoration

The koi pond at Arcadia is undergoing a restoration! The fish have been relocated to a holding tank and the water has been drained from the pond. Cracks in the pond are being repaired, upgraded pumps will be installed, and foliage around the pond will be rejuvenated. The work started on July 17th and is anticipated to be completed in two weeks.

“Hurricane season is upon us and we’re fortunate that tropical storm, Calvin, weakened as it approached our state. Please remember to make sure your hurricane kits and plans for your home and ohana are ready.” - Suzie Schulberg, President & CEO
