Walk To End Alzheimer’s
The Arcadia Family of Companies was honored to serve as a Gold Sponsor for the recent Walk to End Alzheimer’s at Magic Island. This event brought together residents, staff, and the greater community in a powerful display of solidarity and support for those affected by Alzheimer’s and dementia. Participants engaged in a heartfelt scavenger hunt, visiting booths to collect meaningful giveaways, with many selecting flowers that represented different aspects of the Alzheimer’s journey. The color-coded flowers held deep significance: blue for individuals living with Alzheimer’s or dementia, purple for those who have lost a loved one, yellow for caregivers and supporters, and orange for all those advocating for a world without Alzheimer’s. The walk not only raised vital awareness and funds for research, care, and support but also fostered a sense of unity in the fight against these devastating conditions. To cap off the day, participants enjoyed a selection of fresh fruit, muffins, and a refreshing ube and vanilla ice cream cup, celebrating both the event’s success and the community's collective effort to make a difference.
3rd Annual Kiwanis Kupuna Spelling Bee
More than 80 adults age 60 years or better competed in the 3rd Annual Kiwanis Kupuna Spelling Bee on Saturday, October 26, at the Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin Mission. Among the contestants were Arcadia residents Mrs. Lucile Mistysyn (#40), Mrs. Kathryn Fitzsimmons (#39), Mrs. Betty O’Rourke (#38), and Mrs. Esther Geil (#37). They demonstrated their commitment to mental fitness and community engagement. Mrs. Mistysyn, the event’s eldest participant at 104 recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Maryknoll School for her dedication to service and scholarship. Mr. Nick Dreher, 75, claimed the title of 2024 Kiwanis Kupuna Spelling Bee Champion after correctly spelling the word "cavatina" in Round 13. Mr. Dreher, husband of former Arcadia Family of Companies Board member Mrs. Koren Dreher, triumphed in this year’s event. The contestants were inspired to sharpen their minds and have fun, motivated by the event’s founder, Riley Regan, who established the Kiwanis Kupuna Spelling Bee in 2022 to support his grandfather’s mental health following an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Designed to promote mental wellness, the competition offered a lively and engaging experience for all participants.
Spooktacular Celebrations
The Arcadia Family of Companies was brimming with frightful fun this Halloween! At 15 Craigside, residents enjoyed an Olympic themed Halloween fair and costume parade. They had a blast playing spooktacular games like Shot Put (with a balloon), Basketball, Golf, and Pencil Gymnastics (bouncing a pencil into the target). At Arcadia, staff went all out, decorating doors in anticipation of the holiday. Residents judged the decorations in various categories. On Halloween day, everyone took to the runway for a lively costume contest, with residents voting for their favorites. Hale Ola Kino by Arcadia hosted a Halloween Carnival, while Arcadia Adult Day Care embraced a Barbie theme. Clients had a fantastic time crafting, playing games, and collecting plenty of goodies to take home. It was a Halloween to remember!
Honoring Our Heroes on Veterans Day
On November 11th, the Arcadia Family of Companies hosted a heartfelt Veterans Day ceremony to honor and express gratitude to our veterans for their courage and sacrifices. Colonel Walter Ozawa, a distinguished U.S. Army veteran and Arcadia resident, delivered a powerful keynote address, offering personal reflections from his military service and highlighting the importance of service to our country. The ceremony was further elevated by a stirring musical tribute performed by the Oahu College Band, which filled the room with pride and reverence. Adding to the ceremony’s patriotic atmosphere, the Punahou School JROTC cadets presented and posted the colors with great dignity and precision. Residents, staff, and guests came together to celebrate the bravery and dedication of veterans, creating a memorable moment of community, respect, and shared gratitude that will be cherished for years to come.
