Honolulu Star Advertiser Hawaii’s Best 2024

Heartfelt congratulations goes out to the Arcadia Adult Day Care and Day Health Center at Central Union Church, who won First Place in the Adult Day Care category and to 15 Craigside and Arcadia who were recognized as Finalists in the Senior Living Facility category! This achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the employees at the Arcadia Family of Companies.

Mahalo to the readers of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and to the supporters for your votes! You helped us win the 2024 “Hawaii’s Best” awards.

Eli Pick Award

The 15 Craigside Health Care Center received the Eli Pick Facility Leadership Award from the American College of Health Care Administrators, recognizing it as a top performer. Based on strict Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services criteria, only 2% of skilled nursing facilities nationwide qualify. The Health Care Center at 15 Craigside is one of only two facilities in Hawaii to achieve this honor.

Punahou Class of 1948

Arcadia residents, Mrs. Elva Yoshihara and Mrs. Peg Foster are proud alumni of the Punahou Class of 1948. They gather three times a year to reconnect and reminisce. The group recently enjoyed the Arcadia buffet lunch and chicken picatta and raved about the exceptional service from the Dining team.

Kawaii Ice Wave

The Arcadia Adult Day Care clients recently took a trip to Kawaii Ice Wave in Hawaii Kai for a refreshing and enjoyable outing. The group chose from a variety of delicious shaved ice flavors and other frozen treats, perfect for cooling down on a warm day. Everyone left with smiles and had fun socializing with each other.

Bon Dance Celebration

The residents took charge of leading the Bon Dance celebration at 15 Craigside, moving to classic melodies like "Tanko Bushi" and upbeat tunes such as "Gokigen Song." The event featured a traditional mini yagura, a temporary scaffold in the center where the Bon-odori (Bon-Dance) is being danced. The yagura was a handcrafted collaboration by the residents and the Environmental Services team.

AC Unit Failure and Flood Response Update

On Sunday, August 18, the air conditioning unit at the Arcadia Adult Day Care Center broke down and flooded most of the interior. Mahalo to Jerlene Kawasaki, Anela Bartels, Paul Asman and the Housekeeping team for purging items and cleaning up.  We are grateful to Albert Torres, Mike Chong and the 15 Craigside and Arcadia Environmental Service teams for providing additional support.

We Voted – Our Vote Matters

Arcadia resident, Mrs. Jo Uehara, with the support of fellow resident, Mrs. Mary Ooka, launched the ‘Let’s Vote Project’ to inspire fellow residents to participate in the 2024 elections. Through a series of engaging talks, they explored the history of voting in Hawaii, underscored the significance of each vote, and discussed the role of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. This initiative is especially critical, given Hawaii’s recent record-low turnout. To further motivate residents, they introduced an interactive wall titled, ‘We Voted – Our Vote Matters,’ that tracked and celebrated voting participation in the 2024 primary election. Be sure to mark your calendars for the 2024 general election: ballot packets will be mailed by October 18, and the county elections division must receive all ballots by 7 PM on November 5.

Martin Zorn

The Arcadia Family of Companies Board Chair, Martin Zorn captured hummingbirds from his home in Nevada. They are attracted to the color red and the flower-shaped feeding ports draw hummingbirds in. Fifteen types of hummingbirds live in the U.S. They’re the smallest migrating birds, traveling solo up to 500 miles. Unlike other birds, they can fly forward, backward, and even upside down!

“On August 26th we celebrate National Dog Day! Founded by animal rescue advocate and dog trainer, Colleen Paige. On this day, we recognize all dogs and encourage adoption for all those who have yet to find a forever home and family.”
